Dir, dir Jehova will ich singen
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
1. Dir, dir Jehova will ich singen;
To you, you Jehovah, I will sing;
denn wo ist doch ein solcher Gott wie du?
for where indeed is there such a god as you?
Dir will ich meine Lieder bringen,
To you I will present my songs,
ach, gib mir deines Geistes Kraft dazu,
oh, grant me the power of your Spirit to do so,
daß ich es tu im Namen Jesu Christ,
that I do it in the name of Jesus Christ,
so wie es dir durch ihn gefällig ist.
so through him it is pleasing to you.
2. Zieh mich, o Vater, zu dem Sohne,
Draw me, O Father, to the Son,
damit dein Sohn mich wieder zieh zu dir;
so that your Son might then draw me to you;
dein Geist in meinem Herzen wohne
may your Spirit live within my heart
und meine Sinne und Verstand regier,
and govern my mind and understanding,
daß ich den Frieden Gottes schmeck und fühl
that I might taste and feel the peace of God
und dir darob im Herzen sing und spiel.
and for this my heart sings and plays to you.
3. Verleih mir, Höchster, solche Güte,
Bestow on me, Most-High, such goodness
so wird gewiss mein Singen recht getan
so my singing will certainly be rightly done
so klingt es schön in meinem Liede,
so it sounds beautifully through my song,
und ich bet dich im Geist und Wahrheit an
and when I worship you in spirit and truth
so hebt dein Geist mein Herz zu dir empor,
then your Spirit lifts my heart to you on high,
daß ich dir Psalmen sing im höhern Chor.
that I might sing psalms to you in lofty chorus.
4. Denn der kann mich bei die vertreten
For he can advocate for me to them,
mit Seufzern, die ganz unaussprechlich sind,
with sighs, which are wholly beyond expression,
der lehret mich recht gläubig beten,
he instructs me the correct way to pray,
gibt Zeugnis meinem Geist, daß ich dein Kind
und ein Miterbe Jesus Christi sei,
giving proof to my spirit, that I am
your child and coheir in Jesus Christ,
daher ich Abba! Lieber Vater schrei.
to this I cry, Abba! dear Father.
5. Wenn dies aus meinem Herzen schallet,
When this resounds from my heart,
durch deines heilgen Geistes Kraft und Trieb,
by your Holy Spirit’s power and urging,
so bricht dein Vaterherz und wallet
then your fatherly heart breaks and boils
ganz brünstig gegen mir vor heißer Lieb,
with full fervor over me in passionate love,
daß mirs die Bitte nicht versagen kann,
that the request cannot fail me,
die ich nach deinem Willen hab getan.
which I have done according to your will.
6. Was mich dein Geist selbst bitten lehret,
What your Spirit itself instructs me to ask
das ist nach deinem Willen eingericht
has been established toward your will
und wird gewiss von dir erhöret,
and will certainly be heard by you,
weil es im Namen deines Sohns geschicht.
for it is submitted in the name of your son.
Durch welchen ich dein Kind und Erbe bin
Through whom I am your child and heir
und nehme von dir Gnad um Gnade hin.
and receive grace from you because of grace.
7. Wohl mir, daß ich dies Zeugnis,
Bless am I, that I have this proof,
darum bin ich voller Trost und Freudigkeit
therefore I am filled with comfort and joyfulness
und weiß, daß alle gute Gabe,
and know that all good gifts
die ich von dir verlange jederzeit,
which I desire from you at any moment,
die gibst du und tust überschwänglich mehr
you grant me and effusively more
als ich verstehe, bitte und begehr.
than I can understand, request or desire.
8. Wohl mir, ich bitt in Jesu Namen,
Blessed am I, I ask in Jesus' name,
der mich zu deiner Rechten selbst vertritt,
who himself represents me before your judgment,
in ihm ist alles Ja und Amen,
in him all is "yes" and "amen",
was ich von dir im Geist und Glauben bitt:
for whatever I ask of you in spirit and faith:
wohl mir, Lob Dir! itzt und in Ewigkeit,
blessed am I, praise to you! now and eternity,
daß du mir schenkest solche Seligkeit.
for you have granted me such bliss.
