1. Der lieben Sonne Licht und Pracht
The precious sun's light and splendor
hat nun den Tag vollführet,
have now carried out the day,
die Welt hat sich zur Ruh gemacht;
the world has put itself to rest;
tu Seel was sich gebühret;
to which you, soul, are entitled;
tritt an die Himmelstür
step toward the gate of Heaven
und bring ein Lied herfür:
and bring along a song:
laß deine Augen, Herz und Sinn
let your eyes, heart and mind
auf Jesum sein gerichtet hin.
be directed toward Jesus.
2. Ihr hellen Sterne leuchtet wohl,
You bright stars shine well,
und gebet eure Strahlen,
and bestow your beams,
ihr macht die Nacht des Lichtes voll;
you fill the night with light;
doch noch zu tausend Malen
yet still a thousand times more
scheint heller in mein Herz
shine brighter in my heart
die ewge Himmelskerz,
Heaven’s eternal candle,
mein Jesus, meiner Seele Ruhm,
my Jesus, luster of my soul,
mein Schatz, mein Schutz und Eigentum.
my treasure, my protection and possession.
3. Der Schlaf regiert itzt in der Nacht
Sleep now governs in the night
bei Menschen und bei Tieren;
among humans and among animals;
doch einer ist, der oben wacht,
yet there is someone who watches from above
bei dem kein Schlaf zu spüren.
to whom sleep never comes.
Es schlummert Jesus nicht, sein Aug auf mich gericht';
Jesus never slumbers, his eye is always upon me;
drum soll mein Herz auch wache sein,
thus my heart should also stay awake,
daß Jesus wachet nicht allein.
that Jesus not be awake alone.
4. Verschmähe nicht das schlechte Lied,
Do not spurn this feeble song
das ich dir Jesus, singe,
that I sing to you, Jesus,
in meinem Herzen ist kein Fried,
in my heart there is no peace
bis ich es zu dir bringe.
until I can bring it to you.
Ich bringe, was sich kann,
I bring what I can,
ach nimm es gnädig an,
oh, do accept it mercifully,
es ist doch herzlich gut gemeint,
it is of course sincerely well intended,
mein Jesus, meiner Seelen Freund.
my Jesus, friend of my soul.
5. Mit dir will ich zu Bette gehen,
I wish to go to bed with you,
dir will ich mich befehlen,
I decree myself to you,
du wirst, mein Schutzherr, auf mich sehn
you will, my patron, watch over me
zum Besten meiner Seelen.
for my soul’s best.
Ich fürchte keine Not,
I fear no distress,
ja selber nicht den Tod;
yes, not even death itself;
denn wer mit Jesus schlafen geht,
for whoever falls asleep with Jesus,
mit Freunden wieder aufersteht.
wakes again in joy.
6. Ihr Höllengeister, packet euch,
You spirits of Hell, pack yourselves,
ihr habt hier nicht zu schaffen,
you have nothing to achieve here,
dies Haus gehört in Jesu Reich,
this house belongs to Jesus' realm,
drum lasst es sicher schlafen;
thus it sleeps secure;
der Engel starke Wacht
the angel stoutly watches,
hält es in seiner Acht,
keeps it in its view,
ihr Heer und Lager ist mein Schutz,
their army and camp are my protection,
drum sei auch allen Teufeln Trutz.
thus too defense against all devils.
7. So will ich auch nun schlafen ein,
So now I too will fall asleep,
Jesu, in deinen Armen,
Jesus, within your arms,
dein Gnad soll meine Decke sein,
your grace shall be my blanket,
mein Lager dein Erbarmen,
my bed your mercy,
mein Traum die süße Lust,
my dream the sweet passion,
die aus der Seiten Wunden fleußt
that flowed from the wound in your side
und dein' Geist in mein Herz ergeust.
and your spirit poured into my heart.
8. So oft die Nacht mein Ader schlägt,
So whenever my veins pulse in the night,
soll dich mein Geist umfangen,
my spirit shall embrace you,
so vielmal sich mein Herz bewegt,
so much is my heart moved,
soll dies sein mein Verlangen,
this shall be my claim,
daß ich mit lauterm Schall
that I, with loud peals
mög rufen überall:
might call out everywhere:
ach Jesu, Jesu! Du bist mein,
ah Jesus, Jesus! You are mine,
und ich bin auch und bleibe dein.
and I too am and remain yours.
9. Nun, matter Leib, gib dich zur Ruh
Now, languid body, give yourself over to rest
und schlafe sanft und stille:
and sleep tender and still:
ihr müden Augen, schließt euch zu,
you weary eyes, close yourselves,
denn das ist Gottes Wille;
for that is the will of God;
schließt aber dies mit ein:
but close them saying this:
Herr Jesu, ich bin dein!
Lord Jesus, I am yours!
So wird der Schluß recht wohl gemacht,
Thus the conclusion will be done right well,
nun Jesu, Jesu, gute Nacht.
now Jeus, Jesus, Good Night.
