Evangelist
Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend
And there were shepherds in the same region
auf dem Felde bei den Hürden,
in the fields with their pens,
die hüteten des Nachts ihre Herde.
keeping watch over their flocks by night.
Und siehe, des Herren Engel trat zu ihnen,
And behold, the angel of the Lord appeared before them,
und die Klarheit des Herren leuchtet um sie,
and the brilliance of the Lord shown around them,
und sie furchten sich sehr.
and they were very afraid.
3. CORALE
Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht,
Break forth, o lovely morning light,
und laß den Himmel tagen!
and let dawn be in the sky!
Du Hirtenvolk, erschrecke nicht,
You shepherd tribe, be not afraid,
weil dir die Engel sagen,
for the angels say unto you,
daß dieses schwache Knäbelein
that this meek little boy
soll unser Trost und Freude sein,
shall be our comfort and joy,
dazu den Satan zwingen
thereby constraining Satan
und letztlich Friede bringen!
and ultimately bringing peace!

Und der Engel sprach zu ihnen:
And the angel said to them:
Angel
Fürchtet euch nicht, siehe,
Be not afraid, behold,
ich verkündige euch große Freude,
I proclaim to you a great joy
die allem Volke widerfahren wird.
that will come to pass for all nations.
Denn euch ist heute der Heiland geboren,
For unto you today is born the Savior,
welcher ist Christus, der Herr,
who is Christ the Lord,
in der Stadt David.
in the city of David.
5. RECITATIVO BASSO
Was Gott dem Abraham verheißen,
What God promised Abraham
das lässt er nun dem Hirtenchor
erfüllt erweisen.
he reveals manifest
to the band of shepherds.
Ein Hirt hat alles das zuvor
von Gott erfahren müssen.
A shepherd would be first to experience
all this from God.
Und nun muß auch ein Hirt die Tat,
was er damals versprochen hat,
zuerst erfüllet wissen.
And now a shepherd shall be the first
to see the deed fulfilled,
which God back then had promised.
6. ARIA TENORE
Frohe Hirten, eilt, ach eilet,
Merry shepherds, hasten, oh hasten,
eh ihr euch zu lang verweilet,
before you linger too long,
eilt, das holde Kind zu sehn!
hasten to see the fair child!
Geht, die Freude heißt zu schön,
Go, joy is calling so lovely,
sucht die Anmut zu gewinnen,
seek to gain such grace,
geht und labet Herz und Sinnen!
go and refresh the heart and mind!

Und das habt zum Zeichen:
And have this as a sign:
Ihr werdet finden das Kind
You will find the child
in Windeln gewickelt
wrapped in swaddling clothes
und in einer Krippe liegen.
and lying in a manger.

Schaut hin, dort liegt im finstern Stall,
Look there, there lying in a dim stall,
des Herrschaft gehet überall!
his dominion extends throughout!
Da Speise vormals sucht ein Rind,
Where previously a cow sought food
da ruhet itzt der Jungfrau'n Kind.
now there rests the Virgin's child.
9. RECITATIVO BASSO
So geht denn hin, ihr Hirten, geht,
So then go there, you shepherds, go,
daß ihr das Wunder seht:
that you might behold this wonder:
und findet ihr des Höchsten Sohn
and you find the son of the Most High
in einer harten Krippe liegen,
lying in a crude manger,
so singet ihm bei seiner Wiegen
so sing to him beside his cradle
aus einem süßen Ton
with a sweet tones
und mit gesamtem Chor
and with full chorus
dies Lied zur Ruhe vor!
this song for lulling!
10. ARIA ALTO
Schlafe, mein Liebster, genieße der Ruh,
Sleep, my dearest, relish the calm,
wache nach diesem vor aller Gedeihen!
to awake afterward to such luxury!
Labe die Brust,
Refresh the breast,
empfinde die Lust,
perceive the delight
wo wir unser Herz erfreuen!
where our hearts rejoice!
11. RECITATIVO TENORE

Und alsobald war da bei dem Engel
And suddenly there was among the angels
die Menge der himmlischen Heerscharen,
the assembly of heavenly hosts
die lobten Gott und sprachen:
praising God and saying:

Angels
Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe
Glory to God in the highest
und Friede auf Erden
and peace upon earth
und den Menschen ein Wohlgefallen.
and good will to humanity.
13. RECITATIVO BASSO
So recht, ihr Engel, jauchzt und singet,
Rightly so, you angels, rejoice and sing,
daß es uns heut so schön gelinget!
that today transpires so lovely for us!
Auf denn! wir stimmen mit euch ein,
Arise then! we join voice with you,
uns kann es so wie euch erfreun.
it causes us the same joy as it does you.
14. CORALE
Wir singen dir in deinem Heer
We sing unto you amongst your host
aus aller Kraft, Lob, Preis und Ehr,
with all might, laud, praise and honor,
daß du, o lang gewünschter Gast,
that you, O long desired guest
dich nunmehr eingestellet hast.
no longer have concealed yourself.
