Text for BWV 231 (Motet)
Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Sei Lob un Preis mit Ehren,
Laud and praise with honor be
Gott Vater, Sohn und Heil’gem Geist,
to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
der woll’ in uns vermehren
     who would increase in us
was er aus Gnaden uns verheißt,
what he promises us out of grace,
daß wir ihn fest vertrauen,
that we might firmly trust him
gänzlich verlass’n auf ihn,
     completely abandon ourselves to him
von Herzen auf ihn bauen,
build upon him from the heart,
daß uns’r Herz, Mut und Sinn
that our heart, spirit and mind
ihm tröstlich soll’n anhangen,
might cling to him for comfort,
drauf singen wir zur Stund’
to this we sing this hour
Amen, wir werd’n’s erlangen,
     Amen, we will achieve this,
glaub’n wir aus Herzens Grund.
we believe from our heart's foundation.
