Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält 
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)


1. CORO
Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält,
     Where God the Lord is not beside us,
wenn unsre Feinde toben,
     whenever our enemies rage,
und er unser Sach nicht zufällt
     and he not attending to our concerns
im Himmel hoch dort oben,
     there high above in Heaven,
wo er Israel Schutz nicht ist
     where his protection for Israel
     is not present
und selber bricht der Feinde List,
     and he himself not crushing
     the foes' wiles,
so ist's mit uns verloren.
     there all is lost for us.
 

2. CORALE E RECITATIVO ALTO

Was Menschenkraft und -witz anfäht,
     Whatever human might 
     and wit devise
soll uns billig nicht schrecken;
     simply shall not frighten us;
denn Gott der Höchste steht uns bei
     for God, the Most-High,
     stands beside us
und machet uns von ihren Stricken frei.
     and sets us free from their cords.
Er sitzet an der höchsten Stätt,
     He is seated at the highest post,
er wird ihrn Rat aufdecken.
     he will expose their counsel.
Die Gott im Glauben fest umfassen,
     Whoever firmly embraces God in faith
will er niemals versäumen noch verlassen;
     will he never neglect nor abandoned;
er stürzet der Verkehrten Rat
     he overturns the counsel of the wrong
und hindert ihre böse Tat.
     and hinders their evil deeds.
Wenn sie's aufs klügste greifen an,
     When they assail us by cleverness
auf Schlangenlist und falsche Ränke sinnen,
     with serpentine guile and false intrigue,
der Bosheit Endzweck zu gewinnen;
     to obtain their ultimate goal of malice;
so geht doch Gott ein ander Bahn:
     then God takes yet another path:
er führt die Seinigen mit starker Hand,
     he leads his own with a mighty hand,
durchs Kreuzesmeer, in das gelobte Land,
     across the sea of the cross,
     into the promised land,
da wird er alles Unglück wenden.
     where he will alter all misfortunes.
Es steht in seinen Händen.
      It lies in his hands.
 
3. ARIA BASSO
Gleichwie die wilden Meereswellen
     Just as the savage waves of the sea
mit Ungestüm ein Schiff zerschellen,
     smash with vehemence against a ship,
so raset auch der Feinde Wut
     so too raves the foes' wrath
und raubt das beste Seelengut.
     and robs the soul of its greatest good.
Sie wollen Satans Reich erweitern,
     They want to extend Satan's realm,
und Christi Schifflein soll zerscheitern.
     and cause Christ’s tiny ship to flounder.
 
4. CORALE TENORE
Sie stellen uns wie Ketzern nach,
     They stalk us like heretics,
nach unserm Blut sie trachten;
     they thirst for our blood;
noch rühmen sie sich Christen auch,
     they even claim to be Christians too
die Gott allein groß achten.
     who venerate God alone.
Ach Gott, der teure Name dein
     Oh God, this precious name of yours
muß ihrer Schalkheit Deckel sein,
     is certainly the shield against their villainy,
du wirst einmal aufwachen.
     you will one day expose them.
 

5. CORALE E RECITATIVO BASSO, TENORE ED ALTO

Auf sperren sie den Rachen weit,
     They open wide their jaws,
B: nach Löwenart
        as like a lion
    mit brüllendem Getöne;
        with bellowing roars;
    sie fletschen ihre Mörderzähne
        they bare their murderous fangs
und wollen uns verschlingen.
     and want to devour us.
T: Jedoch,
        However,
Lob und Dank sei Gott allezeit;
     praise and thanks be forever unto God;
T: der Held aus Juda schützt uns noch,
        the champion from Judah protects us still,
es wird ihn' nicht gelingen.
     they will not succeed.
A: Sie werden wie die Spreu vergehn,
        They will disperse like chaff,
    wenn seine Gläubigen
    wie grüne Bäume stehn.
        while his faithful stand like verdant trees.
Er wird ihrn Strick zerreißen gar
     He will completely sever their cords
und stürzen ihre falsche Lahr.
     and overturn their false teachings.
B: Gott wird die törichten Propheten
    mit Feuer seines Zornes töten
         God will slay the false prophets
         with the fire of his wrath
    und ihre Ketzerei verstören.
         and disrupt their heresy.
Sie werden's Gott nicht wehren.
     They will not withstand God.

6. ARIA TENORE
Schweig, schweig nur,
taumelnde Vernunft!
     Hush, hush, faltering reason!
Sprich nicht: Die Frommen sind verlorn,
     Do not say: The pious are forsaken,
das Kreuz hat sie nur neu geborn.
     the cross has just birthed them anew.
Denn denen, die auf Jesum hoffen,
     For unto them who hope in Jesus
steht stets die Tür der Gnaden offen;
     the door of grace stands ever open;
und wenn sie Kreuz und Trübsal drückt,
     and when cross and tribulation oppress them,
so werden sie mit Trost erquickt.
      then will they be revived in solace.
 
7. CORO
Die Feind sind all in deiner Hand,
     The foes are all held in your hand
darzu all ihr Gedanken;
     and with them all their notions;
ihr Anschläg sind dir, Herr, bekannt,
     their assaults are known to you, Lord,
hilf nur, daß  wir nicht wanken.
     just help us not to waver.
Vernunft wider den Glauben ficht,
     Should reason dispute faith
aufs Künftge will sie trauen nicht,
     eventually it will lose trust,
da du wirst selber trösten.
     for you yourself will console.

Den Himmel und auch die Erden
    The heavens and so too the earth
hast du, Herr Gott, gegründet;
    were established by you, Lord God;
dein Licht lass uns helle werden,
     let your light shine brightly upon us,
das Herz uns werd entzündet
     our hearts will be ignited
in rechter Lieb des Glaubens dein,
     in true love from faith in you,
bis an das End beständig sein.
     steadfast unto the end.
Die Welt lass immer murren.
     The world can ever grumble.
