Text for CANTATA 167
Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA TENORE
Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe
     You people, extol the love of God
und preiset seine Gütigkeit!
     and praise his goodliness!
Lobt ihn aus reinem Herzenstriebe,
     Laud him from pure heart's desire,
daß er uns zu bestimmter Zeit
     for he, at this precise moment
das Horn des Heils, den Weg zum Leben
an Jesu, seinem Sohn, gegeben.

     has granted us the horn of salvation,
     the way unto life in Jesus his son.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
Gelobet sei der Herr Gott Israel,
     Praise be the Lord God of Israel,
der sich in Gnaden zu uns wendet
     who turns to us in grace,
und seinen Sohn vom hohen Himmelsthron
zum Welterlöser sendet.

     and sends his son from the high throne
     of Heaven as redeemer of the world.
Erst stellte sich Johannes ein
     First John (the Baptist) appeared
und mußte Weg und Bahn
dem Heiland zubereiten;

     and had to prepare the way
     and path for the Savior;
Hierauf kam Jesus selber an,
     Then, Jesus himself arrived
die armen Menschenkinder
und die verlornen Sünder
mit Gnad und Liebe zu erfreu‘n

     to gladden the poor children of humanity
     and forlorned sinners, with grace and love
und sie zum Himmelreich in wahrer Buß zu leiten.
     and to lead them unto the Kingdom of Heaven
     in true penitence.

3. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ED ALTO

Gottes Wort, das trüget nicht,
     God's word does not deceive,
es geschieht, was er verspricht.
     whatever he promises occurs.
Was er in dem Paradies und vor so viel hundert Jahren,
denen Vätern schon verhieß
    That which he once promised our forbears
    so many hundred years ago in paradise
haben wir gottlob erfahren.
    we have, praise God, encountered.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Des Weibes Samen kam,
     Of a woman’s seed he came,
nachdem die Zeit erfüllet;
     according to the time of fulfillment;
Der Segen, den Gott Abraham,
dem Glaubensheld, versprochen,

     The blessing which God promised Abraham,
     that champion of faith,
ist wie der Glanz der Sonne angebrochen,
     has dawned like the brilliance of the sun,
und unser Kummer ist gestillet.
     and our troubles are stilled.
Ein stummer Zacharias preist
     A mute Zachariah praised
mit lauter Stimme Gott vor seine Wundertat,
     God with a loud voice for his wondrous deed
die er dem Volk erzeiget hat.
     which he had revealed to the people.
Bedenkt, ihr Christen, auch, was Gott an euch getan
     Ponder too, you Christians, what God has done for you
und stimmet ihm ein Loblied an!
     and voice unto him a song of praise!

5. CORALE
Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren
     Laud and praise with honor be
Gott Vater, Sohn, Heiligem Geist!
     to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
Der woll in uns vermehren,
     Who will multiply in us
was er uns aus Genad verheißt,
     what he promised us from grace,
daß wir ihm fest vertrauen,
     that we might firmly trust in him,
gänzlich verlass'n auf ihn,
     completely abandon ourselves to him,
von Herzen auf ihn bauen,
     earnestly build upon him,
daß unsr Herz, Mut und Sinn
     that our heart, spirit and mind
ihm festiglich anhangen;
     securely cling to him;
darauf sing'n wir zur Stund:
     to this we do sing this hour:
Amen, wir werd'n's erlangen,
     Amen, we shall prevail,
gläub'n wir aus Herzens Grund.
     we believe from the depths of our hearts.
