1. ARIA TENORE
Nur jedem das Seine!
Unto each his own!
Muß Obrigkeit haben Zoll, Steuern und Gaben,
If authorities must have tolls, taxes and alms,
man weigre sich nicht der schuldigen Pflicht!
one should not refuse these debtful dues!
Doch bleibet das Herze dem Höchsten alleine.
Still the heart remains the Most-High’s alone.
2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Du bist, mein Gott, der Geber aller Gaben;
You are, my God, the granter of all gifts;
wir haben, was wir haben, allein von deiner Hand.
we have what we have from your hand alone.
Du, du hast uns gegeben Geist, Seele, Leib und Leben
You, you have granted us spirit, soul, body and life
und Hab und Gut und Ehr und Stand!
and possessions, and goods and honor and position!
Was sollen wir denn dir zur Dankbarkeit dafür erlegen,
What shall we then compensate you in gratitude for these,
da unser ganz Vermögen nur dein und gar nicht unser ist?
for our entire fortune is only yours and not at all ours?
Doch ist noch eins, das dir, Gott, wohlgefällt:
Yet, there is still one thing, God, which might please you:
Das Herze soll allein, Herr, deine Zinsemünze sein.
The heart alone, Lord, shall be your interest due.
Ach! aber ach! ist das nicht schlechtes Geld?
But oh my! is that not fake currency?
Der Satan hat dein Bild daran verletzet,
die falsche Münz ist abgesetzet.
Satan has distorted your image upon it;
the wrong coin has been deposited.
3. ARIA BASSO
Laß mein Herz die Münze sein,
Let my heart be the coin,
die ich dir, mein Jesu, steure!
which I remit to you, my Jesus!
Ist sie gleich nicht allzu rein,
If it not be entirely clean,
ach, so komm doch und erneure,
ah, then come and restore,
Herr, den schönen Glanz bei ihr!
Lord, a beautiful polish upon it.
Komm, arbeite, schmelz und präge,
Come, work it, forge and imprint it
daß dein Ebenbild bei mir
so that on me your likeness
ganz erneuert glänzen möge!
might glisten brand new!
4. ARIOSO (DUETTO) SOPRANO ED ALTO
Ich wollte dir, O Gott, das Herze gerne geben;
I would, O God, gladly give you my heart;
der Will ist zwar bei mir,
in fact the desire is within me,
doch Fleisch und Blut will immer widerstreben.
yet flesh and blood will always resist.
Dieweil die Welt das Herz gefangen hält,
As long as the world holds the heart captive,
so will sie sich den Raub nicht nehmen lassen;
so will it allow nothing to be robbed of it;
jedoch ich muß sie hassen,
wenn ich dich lieben soll.
therefore, I must loath it if I am to love you.
So mache doch mein Herz mit deiner Gnade voll;
So, make indeed my heart full with your grace;
leer es ganz aus von Welt und allen Lüsten
drain it completely of the world and all desires
und mache mich zu einem rechten Christen.
and make me into a true Christian.
5. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ED ALTO
Nimm mich mir und gib mich dir!
Take me from myself and give me to you!
Nimm mich mir und meinem Willen,
Take me from myself and my will,
deinen Willen zu erfüllen;
to fulfill your will;
gib dich mir mit deiner Güte,
give me yourself along with your goodness,
daß mein Herz und mein Gemüte
that my heart and my mind
in dir bleibe für und für,
remain in you forever and ever,
nimm mich mir und gib mich dir!
take me from myself and give me to you!
6. CORALE
Führ auch mein Herz und Sinn
Also lead my heart and thoughts
durch deinen Geist dahin,
there by your Spirit
daß ich mög alles meiden,
that I might avoid all
was mich und dich kann scheiden,
which can sever me from you,
und ich an deinem Leibe
and I, in your body
ein Gliedmaß ewig bleibe.
will remain a member forever.
