Text for Cantata 155
Mein Gott, wie lang, ach lange?
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1.  RECITATIVO SOPRANO

Mein Gott, wie lang', ach lange?
     My God how long, oh so long?
Des Jammers ist zu viel,
     This misery is too much,
ich sehe gar kein Ziel
     I see no end at all
der Schmerzen und der Sorgen!
     to the pain and suffering!
Dein süßer Gnadenblick
     Your sweet view of grace
hat unter Nacht und Wolken sich verborgen,
     is hidden behind night and clouds,
die Liebeshand zieht sich, ach, ganz zurück!
     the loving hand, alas, utterly withdrawn from me!
Um Trost ist mir sehr bange!
     I greatly yearn for comfort!
Ich finde, was mich Armen täglich kränket,
     I find, which daily grieves me a poor one,
der Tränen Maß wird stets voll eingeschenket,
     my measure of tears continually poured full,
der Freuden Wein gebricht;
     the wine of joy lacking;
mir sinkt fast alle Zuversicht!
     almost all confidence seeps away from me!

2.  ARIA ALTO E TENORE
Du mußt glauben,
     You must believe,
du mußt hoffen,
     you must hope
du mußt Gott gelassen sein.
     you must remain calm in God.
Jesus weiß die rechten Stunden,
     Jesus knows the proper hour
dich mit Hülfe zu erfreun.
     to cheer you with his aid.
Wenn die trübe Zeit verschwunden,
     As dismal times subside
steht sein ganzes Herz dir offen.
     his whole heart stands open before you.

3.  RECITATIVO BASSO
So sei, o Seele, sei zufrieden!
     So be, O soul, be at peace!
Wann es vor deinen Augen scheint,
     When it appears to your eyes,
als ob dein liebster Freund sich ganz
von dir geschieden,
     as though your dearest friend
     has completely abandoned you,
wann er dich kurze Zeit verläßt.
     that he suddenly deserts you.
Herz! glaube fest, es wird ein Kleines sein,
     Heart! believe firmly, this is but trivial,
da er für bittre Zähren dir Trost und  Freudenwein
und Honigseim für Wermut will gewähren.

     for he will impart to you, for bitter tears,
     comfort, the wine of joy and raw honey from wormwood,
Ach, denke nicht, daß er von Herzen dich betrübe;
     Oh, do not think that he willingly causes you distress;
er prüfet nur durch Leiden deine Liebe,
     he merely tests your love through affliction,
er machet daß dein Herz bei trüben Stunden weine,
     he allows your heart to weep during bleak hours,
damit sein Gnadenlicht dir desto lieblicher erscheine:
     thereby, the light of his grace appears
     that much dearer to you:
er hat, was dich ergötzt zuletzt zu
deinem Trost dir vorbehalten;

     he has in reserve for your comfort
     what in the end will enthrall you;
drum laß ihn nur, o Herz,
     therefore, just let him, O heart,
in allem walten!
     prevail in everything!

4.  ARIA SOPRANO
Wirf, mein Herze, wirf dich noch
     Throw, my heart, just throw yourself
in des Höchsten Liebesarme,
     into the loving arms of the Most-High
daß er deiner sich erbarme!
     that he might have mercy on you!
Lege deiner Sorgen Joch
     Lay your yoke of sorrows
und was dich bisher beladen,
     and whatever burdens you 'til now
auf die Achseln seiner Gnaden!
     upon the shoulders of his grace!

5.  CORALE
Ob sich's anließ, als wollt' er nicht,
     Though it seems he doesn’t care,
laß dich es nicht erschrecken,
     let yourself not be dismayed,
denn wo er ist am besten mit,
     for where he is the most present,
da will er’s nicht entdecken;
     there he will not reveal it;
sein Wort laß dir gewißer sein,
     his word allows you to be certain,
und ob dein Herz spräch lauter Nein,
     and though your heart says loudly "no"
so laß doch dir nicht grauen.
     still let yourself indeed not dread.
