Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben
Heart and mouth and deed and life
muß von Christo Zeugnis geben,
must bear witness to the Christ
ohne Furch und Heuchelei,
without fear or pretense
daß er Gott und Heiland sei.
for he is God and Savior.

Gebenedeiter Mund!
Blessed Virgin's mouth!
Maria macht ihr Innerstes der Seelen
durch Dank und Rühmen kund;
Mary made known the innermost of her soul
through her thanks and praise;
sie fänget bei sich an,
she began of her own accord
des Heilands Wunder zu erzählen
to describe the Savior's miracle
was er an ihr, als seiner Magd getan
which he would accomplish
in her, his handmaiden.
O! menschliches Geschlecht,
O! human race,
des Satans und der Sünden Knecht,
servant of Satan and of sin,
du bist befreit durch Christi tröstendes Erscheinen
you are freed through the consoling advent of Christ
von dieser Last und Deinstbarkeit!
from this burden and bondage!
Jedoch, dein Mund und dein verstockt Gemüte
And yet your mouth and your stubborn mind
verschweigt, verleugnet solche Güte;
remain quiet, denying such goodness;
doch wisse, daß dich nach der Schrift
just be aware that according to scripture
ein allzu scharfes Urteil trifft.

Schäme dich, o Seele nicht,
Be not ashamed, O soul,
deinen Heiland zu bekennen,
to profess your Savior,
soll er dich die Seine nennen
he shall name you as his own
vor des Vaters Angesicht;
before the countenance of Father;
doch wer ihn auf dieser Erden
yet whoever on this earth
zu verleugnen sich nicht scheut,
is not afraid to deny [him]
soll von ihm verleugnet werden,
shall himself be denied by him
wenn er kömmt zur Herrlichkeit.

Verstockung kann Gewaltige verblenden,
Stubbornness can blind the mighty
bis sie des Höchsten Arm vom Stuhle stößt;
until the arm of the Most-High
topples them from their throne,
doch dieser Arm erhebt,
yet this very arm elevates,
obschon vor ihm der Erden Kreis erbebt,
even as the earth’s sphere quakes before him,
hingegen die Elenden, so er erlost.

O hochbeglückte Christen, auf,
O most fortunate Christians, arise,
machet euch bereit,
make yourselves ready,
itzt ist die angenehme Zeit,
now is the favorable time,
izt ist der Tag des Heils:
now is the day of salvation:
der Heiland heißt euch Leib und Geist
the Savior bids you, body and spirit
mit Glaubensgaben rüsten,
equipped with the gifts of the faith,
auf, ruft zu ihm in brünstigem Verlangen,
arise, call upon him with fervent longing,
um ihn im Glauben zu empfangen.

Wohl mir, daß ich Jesum habe,
Blessed am I that I have Jesus,
o wie feste halt’ ich ihn,
O, how firmly I hold him,
daß er mir mein Herze labe,

wenn ich krank und traurig bin.

Jesum hab' ich, der mich liebet
I have Jesus, who loves me
und sich mir zu eigen giebet;

Hilf, Jesu, hilf, daß ich auch dich bekenne
Help me, Jesu, help that I profess you also
in Wohl und Weh, in Freud und Leid,
in well or woe, in joy or pain,
daß ich dich meinen Heiland nenne
that I name you as my Savior
im Glauben und Gelassenheit,
in faith and tranquility,
daß stets mein Herz von deiner Liebe brenne.

Der höchsten Allmacht Wunderhand
The omnipotent miracle-hand of the Most-High
wirkt im Verborgenen der Erden.

ihn zieht der Liebe Band
the bonds of love moved him
bereits in seiner Mutter Leibe,
already in his mother’s womb,
daß er den Heiland kennt,
that he recognize the Savior,
ob er ihn gleich noch nicht mit seinem Munde nennt,
though not yet identifying him verbally,
er wird bewegt,
he was stirred,
er hüpft und springet,
he kicked and leapt,
indem Elisabeth das Wunderwerk ausspricht,
so that Elizabeth proclaimed the miracle,
indem Maria Mund der Lippen Opfer bringet.
so that the mouth of Mary
expressed an offering of the lips.
Wenn ihr, o Gläubige,
des Fleisches Schwachheit merkt
When you, O believers,
mark the weakness of the flesh
wenn euer Herz in Liebe brennet,
when your hearts burn with love,
und doch der Mund den Heiland nicht bekennet,
and yet the mouth does not profess the Savior,
Gott ist es, der euch kräftig stärkt,
it is God who will mightily empower you,
er will in euch des Geistes Kraft erregen,
he will arouse the Spirit’s power in you,
ja Dank und Preis auf eure Zunge legen.
yes, placing thanks and praise upon your tongues.
9. ARIA BASSO
Ich will von Jesu Wundern singen
I want to sing of the wonders of Jesus
und ihm der Lippen Opfer bringen,
and bring him an offering of the lips,
er wird nach seiner Liebe Bund
he will, by his covenant of love,
das schwache Fleisch, den irischen Mund
durch heilges Feuer kräftig zwingen.
boldly compel weak flesh
and erring tongue, with sacred fire.
10. CORALE
Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
Jesus remains my joy,
meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
my heart's comfort and drink,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Jesus defends against all sorrow,
er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
he is my life's force,
meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
my eye's delight and sun,
meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
my soul's treasure and bliss;
darum laß ich Jesum nicht
thus I will not let Jesus
aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.
