Text for BWV 142
Uns ist ein Kind Geboren
Johann Kuhnau
(previously attributed to J.S. Bach)

1.  CONCERTO

2. CORO
Uns ist ein Kind geboren,
     Unto us a child is born,
ein Sohn ist uns gegeben.
     a son to us is given.

3.  ARIA BASSO
Dein Geburtstag ist erschienen,
     Your day of birth has appeared,
so erfordert meine Pflicht,
     so duty would compel me
dich, mein Jesu zu bedienen.
     to serve you, my Jesus.
Doch, ich Armer weiß gar nicht,
     Yet, poor as I am, I know not at all
was ich suche, was ich finde,
     what I can seek, what I can find,
welches dir zum Angebinde
als ein heilig Opfer taugt,
     which would be an acceptable gift
     for you as a sacred offering,
dich, o großer Gott, vergnügt.
     to bring you pleasure, O great God.

4. CORO
Ich will den Namen Gottes loben
     I will praise the name of God
mit einem Liede,
     with a song,
und will ihn hoch ehren mit Dank.
     and will highly revere him with thanks.

5. ARIA TENORE
Jesu, dir sei Dank gesungen,
     Jesus, thanks be sung unto you,
Jesu, dir sei Ehr' und Ruhm!
     Jesus, unto you be glory and fame!
Denn das Los ist mir in allen
     For my lot, in spite of all,
auf das Lieblichste gefallen,
     has landed upon that most dear,
du, du bist mein Eigentum.
     you, you are my possession.

6. RECITATIVO ALTO
Immanuell! Du wollest dir gefallen lassen,
     Immanuel! You would let it be your pleasure
daß dich mein Geist und Glaube kann umfassen;
     that my spirit and faith cling to you;
kann ich die Freude gleich so herzlich nicht entdecken,
     can I now honestly suppress such joy
die dein Geburtstag will erwecken,
     that your day of birth will arouse
wird doch mein schwaches Lallen
     would that my meager prattle still
dir durch Lob und Preis gefallen.
     please you in its laud and praise.

7. ARIA ALTO
Jesu, dir sei Preis gesungen,
     Jesus, praise be sung to you,
denn ich bin durch dich erlöst.
     for through you am I redeemed.
Nichts betrübet das Gemüte,
     Nothing can distress the mind,
da mein Herz durch deine Güte
     for my heart, through your goodness,
überschwenglich wird getröst't.
     will be effusively comforted.

8. CORALE
Alleluja, Alleluja, gelobet sei Gott,
     Alleluia, alleluia, praise be to God,
singen wir all' aus unsres Herzens Grunde;
     we all sing from deep within our hearts;
denn Gott hat heut' gemacht solch' Freud'
     for God has today created such joy
der wir vergessen soll'n zu keiner Stunde.
     which we shall not forget at any an hour.
