Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn!
     Prepare the ways, prepare the paths!
Bereitet die Wege
     Prepare the ways
und machet die Stege
     and make the bridges
im Glauben und Leben
     in faith and life
dem Höchsten ganz eben,
     fully smooth for the Most High,
Messias kömmt an!
     Messiah do appear!

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Willst du dich Gottes Kind und Christi Bruder nennen,
     If you want to name yourself
     a child of God and brother in Christ
so müssen Herz und Mund den Heiland frei bekennen.
     then heart and mouth must
     freely profess the Savior.
Ja, Mensch, dein ganzes Leben
     Yes, human, your entire life
muß von dem Glauben Zeugnis geben!
     must bear witness through faith!
Soll Christi Wort und Lehre
     Should Christ’s words and teachings
auch durch dein Blut versiegelt sein,
     be sealed by your blood as well,
so gib dich willig drein!
     then willingly give in to them!
Denn dieses ist der Christen Kron und Ehre.
     For this is the Christian's crown and glory.
Indes, mein Herz, bereite noch heute
     To that end, my heart, prepare yet today
dem Herrn die Glaubensbahn
     the path of faith for the Lord
und räume weg die Hügel und die Höhen,
     and clear away the hills and elevations
die ihm entgegen stehen!
     that stand in his way!
Wälz ab die schweren Sündensteine,
     Roll back the heavy stone of sin,
nimm deinen Heiland an,
     receive your Savior,
daß er mit dir im Glauben sich vereine!
     that he might be united with you in faith!

Wer bist du? Frage dein Gewissen,
     Who are you? Ask of your conscience,
da wirst du sonder Heuchelei,
ob du, o Mensch, falsch oder treu,
dein rechtes Urteil hören müssen.
     there, O human, whether false or true,
     will you be able to hear
     your just verdict without pretense,
Wer bist du? Frage das Gesetze,
     Who are you? Ask the law,
das wird dir sagen, wer du bist,
     it will tell you, who you are,
ein Kind des Zorns in Satans Netze,
     a child of wrath in Satan’s nets,
ein falsch und heuchlerischer Christ.
     a false and pretentious Christian.
 
4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ich will, mein Gott, dir frei heraus bekennen,
     I will, my God, henceforth freely confess to you,
ich habe dich bisher nicht recht bekannt.
     I have not, until now, rightly professed you.
Ob Mund und Lippen gleich dich Herrn und Vater nennen,
     Even though mouth and lips alike
     name you Lord and Father,
hat sich mein Herz doch von dir abgewandt.
     my heart has still turned from you.
Ich habe dich verleugnet mit dem Leben!
     I have denied you with my life!
Wie kannst du mir ein gutes Zeugnis geben?
     How can you grant me favorable testimony?
Als, Jesu, mich dein Geist und Wasserbad
gereiniget von meiner Missetat,
     When, Jesus, your spirit and font of water
     purified me of my transgressions,
hab ich dir zwar stets feste Treu versprochen;
     I did in fact promise you ever firm devotion;
ach! aber ach! der Taufbund ist gebrochen.
     alas! but alas! the baptismal covenant is broken.
Die Untreu reuet mich!
     I regret my disloyalty!
Ach Gott, erbarme dich,
     Oh God, have mercy,
Ach hilf, daß ich mit unverwandter Treue
     Oh help me in unwavering devotion
den Gnadenbund im Glauben stets erneue!
     to ever renew the covenant of grace in faith!

Christi Glieder, ach bedenket,
     Members of Christ, oh remember,
was der Heiland euch geschenket
     what the Savior bestowed on you
durch der Taufe reines Bad!
     through the cleansing bath of baptism!
Bei der Blut- und Wasserquelle
     By the blood- and water-springs
werden eure Kleider helle,
     will your clothes be whitened,
die befleckt von Missetat.
     so stained by transgression.
Christus gab zum neuen Kleide
     Christ added to these new garments
roten Purpur, weiße Seide,
     crimson robes, white silks,
diese sind der Christen Staat.
      these are the Christian's raiment.
 
6. CORALE
Ertöt uns durch deine Güte;
     Slay us by your goodness;
erweck uns durch deine Gnad;
     awaken us by your grace;
den alten Menschen kränke,
     inflict ancient humanity,
daß der neu' leben mag
     that it may live anew
wohl hie auf dieser Erden,
     well, here upon this earth,
den Sinn und Begehrden
     our purpose and desires
und G'danken habn zu dir.
      and thoughts be unto you.
