Text for Cantata 115
Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit,
     Make yourself ready, my spirit,
wache, fleh und bete,
     watch, implore and pray,
daß dich nicht die böse Zeit
unverhofft betrete;
     that the time of evil does not
     confront you unaware;
denn es ist Satans List
     for it is by Satan’s craft
über viele Frommen
     that many of the pious
zur Versuchung kommen.
     come into temptation.

2. ARIA ALTO
Ach schläfrige Seele, wie? ruhest du noch?
     What's this, drowsy soul? are you still at rest?
Ermuntre dich doch!
     Do rouse yourself!
Es möchte die Strafe dich plötzlich erwecken
     Retribution might suddenly wake you
und, wo du nicht wachest,
     and, while you were not keeping watch,
im Schlafe des ewigen Todes bedecken.
     blanket you in the slumber of eternal death.

3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Gott, so vor deine Seele wacht,
     God, thus in watching over your soul,
hat Abscheu an der Sünden Nacht;
     has loathing for the night of sin;
er sendet dir sein Gnadenlicht
     he sends you his light of grace
und will vor diese Gaben,
     and wants in return for this gift,
die er so reichlich dir verspricht,
     which he promises you so abundantly,
nur offne Geistesaugen haben.
     merely to have opened eyes to the spirit.
Des Satans List ist ohne Grund,
     The cunning of Satan, without reason,
die Sünder zu bestricken;
     can bewitch sinners;
brichst du nun selbst den Gnadenbund,
     if you yourself now break the covenant of grace
wirst du die Hilfe nie erblicken.
     you will never glimpse of aid.
Die ganze Welt und ihre Glieder
     The entire world and its members
sind nichts als falsche Brüder;
     are nothing but false brethren;
doch macht dein Fleisch und Blut hiebei
sich lauter Schmeichelei.
     indeed your flesh and blood hereby
     succumb to rampant adulation.

4. ARIA SOPRANO
Bete aber auch dabei
     However, do also pray thereby
mitten in dem Wachen!
     in the midst of your watch!
Bitte bei der großen Schuld
deinen Richter um Geduld,
     Plead to your judge for lenience
     for such huge guilt,
soll er dich von Sünden frei
     that he might free you from sin
und gereinigt machen!
     and make you clean!

5. RECITATIVO TENORE
Er sehnet sich nach unserm Schreien,
     He aches over our crying,
er neigt sein gnädig Ohr hierauf;
     and inclines his merciful ear toward it;
wenn Feinde sich auf unsern Schaden freuen,
     when the enemy delights in our casualties,
so siegen wir in seiner Kraft:
     still we triumph in his power:
indem sein Sohn, in dem wir beten,
     in that his Son, to whom we pray,
uns Mut und Kräfte schafft
     procurs courage and strength within us
und will als Helfer zu uns treten.
     and will step to us as helper.

6. CORALE
Drum so laßt uns immerdar
     Thus then let us evermore
wachen, flehen, beten,
     watch, implore and pray,
weil die Angst, Not und Gefahr
     for fear, distress and danger
immer näher treten;
     tread ever nearer;
denn die Zeit ist nicht weit,
     for the time is not far off
da uns Gott wird richten
     when God will judge us
und die Welt vernichten.
     and obliterate the world.
