Text for Cantata 189
Meine Seele rühmt und preist
? Georg Melchior Hoffmann (ca. 1679-1715)
previously attributed to J.S. Bach

1.   ARIA TENORE
Meine Seele rühmt und preist
     My soul extols and praises
Gottes Huld und reiche Güte.
     God's grace and rich goodness.
Und mein Geist,
     And my spirit,
Herz und Sinn und ganz Gemüte
heart and mind and entire being
ist in meinem Gott erfreut,
     rejoice in my God,
der mein Heil und Helfer heißt.
who is called my salvation and helper.

2.   RECITATIVO TENORE
Denn seh ich mich und auch mein Leben an,
For when I consider myself and my life,
so muß mein Mund in diese Worte brechen:
so must my mouth break forth with these words:
Gott, Gott! was hast du doch an mir getan!
God, God! what you indeed have done for me!
Es ist mit tausend Zungen
nicht einmal auszusprechen.
     It cannot once be expressed
     even with a thousand tongues.
Wie gut du bist, wie freundlich deine Treu,
How good you are, how kind your devotion,
wie reich dein Liebe sei.
     how abounding your love is.
So sei dir denn Lob, Ehr und Preis gesungen.
Thus, laud, glory and praise be sung to you.

3.   ARIA TENORE
Gott hat sich hoch gesetzet
God has seated himself on high
und sieht auf das, was niedrig ist.
and looks upon that which is lowly.
Gesetzt, daß mich die Welt
gering und elend hält,
     Grave, that the world
     considers me meager and wretched,
doch bin ich hoch geschätzet,
     yet I am highly cherished
weil Gott mich nicht vergißt.
     since God forgets me not.

4.   RECITATIVO TENORE
O was für große Dinge
     O what great things
treff ich an allen Orten an,
     I confront in all places,
die Gott an mir getan,
which God has done for me,
wofür ich mich mein Herz zum Opfer bringe;
     for this my heart presents an offering;
er tut es,
     he does this,
dessen Macht den Himmel kann umschränken,
whose power can circumscribe the heavens,
an dessen Namen pracht
     the splendor of whose name
die Seraphim in Demut nur gedenken.
the seraphim in humility can only ponder.
Er hat mir Leib und Leben,
er hat mir auch das Recht zur Seligkeit,
und was mich hier und dort erfreut,
aus lauter Huld gegeben.
He has bestowed on me, body and life,
so too the privilege of blessedness,
and that which delights me here
and everywhere, out of pure grace.

5.   ARIA TENORE
Deine Güte, dein Erbarmen,
     Your goodness, your mercy,
wahret, Gott, zu aller Zeit.
     God safeguards at all times.
Du erzeigst Barmherzigkeit
     You display compassion
denen dir ergebnen Armen.
to those poor, devoted to you.
