Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele

Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele,
Adorn yourself, o dear soul
laß die dunkle Sündenhöhle,
leave the dark cavern of sin,
komm ans helle Licht gegangen,
come out to confront the bright light,
fange herrlich an zu prangen;
begin to gloriously shine;
denn der Herr voll Heil und Gnaden
for the Lord, full of healing and grace
läßt dich itzt zu Gaste laden.
invites you now as guest.
Der den Himmel kann verwalten,
He who can sustain Heaven,
will selbst Herberg in dir halten.
will himself take up shelter in you.
2. ARIA TENORE
Ermuntre dich: dein Heiland klopft,
Arouse yourself: your savior knocks,
ach, öffne bald die Herzenspforte!
ah, quickly open the portals of your heart!
Ob du gleich in entzückter Lust
Even if in your rapt desire
nur halb gebrochne Freudenworte
you have only fractured words of joy
zu deinem Jesu sagen mußt.

Wie teuer sind des heilgen Mahles Gaben!
How precious are the holy meal's gifts!
Sie finden ihresgleichen nicht.
Nothing like them is to be found.
Was sonst die Welt vor kostbar hält,
Whatever else the world considers valuable
sind Tand und Eitelkeiten;
is tasteless and vain;
ein Gotteskind wünscht diesen Schatz zu haben
a child of God wishes to have this treasure

Mein Herz fühlt in sich Furcht und Freude;
My heart feels fear and joy within;
es wird die Furcht erregt
it does arouse this fear
wenn es die Hoheit überlegt
when it considers the majesty
wenn es sich nicht in das Geheimnis findet,
when it finds nothing in the mystery,
noch durch Vernunft dies hohe Werk ergründet.

Nur Gottes Geist kann durch sein Wort uns lehren,
Only God's spirit can teach us through his word
wie sich allhier die Seelen nähren,
how all souls here are nourished,
die sich im Glauben zugeschickt.

Die Freude aber wird gestärket,
Joy however will be bolstered,
wenn sie des Heilands Herz erblickt

und seiner Liebe Größe merket.

Lebens Sonne, Licht der Sinnen,
Sun of life, light of the mind,
Herr, der du mein alles bist!
Lord, you who are my everything!
Du wirst meine Treue sehen
You will see my devotion
und den Glauben nicht verschmähen,

der noch schwach und furchtsam ist.

Herr, laß an mir dein treues Lieben,
so dich vom Himmel abgetrieben,

Ignite my spirit in love
daß er sich nur nach dem,
was himmlisch heißt, im Glauben lenke

toward that which can be called heavenly,
und deiner Liebe stets gedenke.

Jesu, wahres Brot des Lebens,
Jesus, true bread of life,
hilf, daß ich doch nicht vergebens

Laß mich durch dies Seelenessen
Let me, through this meal for the soul,
deine Liebe recht ermessen,
truly appreciate your love,
daß ich auch, wie itzt auf Erden,
that I, even now upon earth,
mög ein Gast im Himmel werden.
