Text for Cantata 171
Gott, wie dein Name, so ist auch dein Ruhm
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Gott, wie dein Name,
     God, like your name,
so ist auch dein Ruhm
     so too your glory
bis an der Welt Ende.
extends to the ends of the earth.

2. ARIA TENORE
Herr, so weit die Wolken gehen,
Lord, as far as the clouds proceed,
gehet deines Namens Ruhm.
so proceeds the glory of your name.
Alles, was die Lippen rührt,
Everything that the lips can reach,
alles, was noch Odem führt,
     everything that yet has breath,
wird dich in der Macht erhöhen.
     will exalt you in might.

3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Du süßer Jesus-Name du,
You sweet name of Jesus, you,
in dir ist meine Ruh,
     in you is my repose,
du bist mein Trost auf Erden,
you are my comfort upon earth,
wie kann denn mir
im Kreuze bange werden?
     why then should I be
     anxious about the cross?
Du bist mein festes Schloss und mein Panier,
You are my secure castle and my banner,
da lauf ich hin,
     to where I run
wenn ich verfolget bin.
     when I am pursued.
Du bist mein Leben und mein Licht,
You are my life and my light,
mein Ehre, meine Zuversicht,
     my honor, my assurance,
mein Beistand in Gefahr
     my assistance in peril
und mein Geschenk zum neuen Jahr.
and my gift for the New Year.

4. ARIA SOPRANO
Jesus soll mein erstes Wort
in dem neuen Jahre heißen.
     Jesus shall be voiced
my first word of the New Year.
Fort und fort
     Back and forth
lacht sein Nam in meinem Munde,
his name laughs within my mouth,
und in meiner letzten Stunde
     and in my final hour
ist Jesus auch mein letztes Wort.
Jesus is also my final word.

5. RECITATIVO BASSO
Und da du, Herr, gesagt:
     And since you said, Lord:
bittet nur in meinem Namen,
simply ask it in my name,
so ist alles Ja! und Amen!
so shall it be! and Amen!
So flehen wir, du Heiland
aller Welt, zu dir:
     Thus we, the entire world,
     implore you:
verstoß uns ferner nicht,
     do not cast us away,
behüt uns dieses Jahr
     safeguard us this year
für Feuer, Pest und Kriegsgefahr!
against fire, plague and peril of war!
Laß uns dein Wort, das helle Licht,
Let your word, that bright lamp,
noch rein und lauter brennen;
     still burn pure and vast;
gib unsrer Obrigkeit
     grant our authorities
und dem gesamten Lande
     and the entire land
dein Heil des Segens zu erkennen;
     to recognize your salvation of blessing;
gib allezeit
     grant at all times
Glück und Heil zu allem Stande.
happiness and salvation in every station.
Wir bitten, Herr, in deinem Namen,
We ask, Lord, in your name,
sprich: ja! darzu, sprich: Amen, Amen!
say: yes! to this say: Amen, Amen!

6. CORALE
Laß uns das Jahr vollbringen
     Let us complete the year
zu Lob dem Namen dein,
     in praise of your name,
daß wir demselben singen
     that we sing the same
in der Christen Gemein.
     midst the Christian congregation.
Wollst uns das Leben fristen
If you want to terminte a life
durch dein allmächtig Hand,
     through your almighty hand,
erhalt dein liebe Christen
     preserve your dear Christians
and unser Vaterland!
     and our fatherland!
Dein Segen zu uns wende,
     Direct your blessings toward us,
gib Fried an allem Ende,
     grant peace to every end,
gib unverfälscht im Lande
dein seligmachend Wort,
     bestow your beatifying word,
     unaltered throughout the land,
die Teufel mach zuschanden
     putting the Devil to shame
hier und an allem Ort!
     here and in all places!
