Text for Cantata 170
Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA ALTO
Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust,
     Contented rest, precious desire of the soul,
dich kann man nicht bei Höllensünden,
wohl aber Himmelseintracht finden;
     one finds you not amidst the sins of Hell,
     but rather in the concord of Heaven;
du stärkst allein die schwache Brust.
     you alone empower the feeble breast.
Drum sollen lauter Tugendgaben
     Hence, many a virtuous gift shall
in meinem Herzen Wohnung haben.
     find dwelling in my heart.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
Die Welt, das Sündenhaus,
     The world, that house of sin,
bricht nur in Höllenlieder aus
     breaks forth only with hellish songs
und sucht durch Hass und Neid
     and seeks, through hate and envy
des Satans Bild an sich zu tragen.
     to bear only the image of Satan.
Ihr Mund ist voller Ottergift,
     Its mouth is full of venom
der oft die Unschuld tödlich trifft,
     which often fatally afflicts the innocent
und will allein von Racha sagen.
     and ultimately will speak only foolishness.
Gerechter Gott,
     Righteous God,
wie weit ist doch der Mensch
von dir entfernet;
     how far the human
     is indeed distanced from you;
du liebst,
     you love,
jedoch sein Mund macht Fluch und Feindschaft kund
     even though his mouth produces curses and hostility
und will den Nächsten nur mit Füßen treten.
     and only wants to tread his foot upon the neighbor.
Ach! diese Schuld ist schwerlich zu verbeten.
     Alas! this guilt is hard to tolerate.

3. ARIA ALTO
Wie jammern mich doch die verkehrten Herzen,
     How I do bemoan these depraved hearts,
die dir, mein Gott, so sehr zuwider sein;
     which are so adverse to you, my God;
ich zittre recht und fühle tausend Schmerzen,
     I verily tremble and feel thousandfold pain,
wenn sie sich nur an Rach und Hass erfreun.
     when they merely delight in revenge and hate.
Gerechter Gott, was magst du doch gedenken,
     Righteous God, what indeed must you be thinking,
wenn sie allein mit rechten Satansränken
     when they simply, with truly satanic schemes,
dein scharfes Strafgebot so frech verlacht.
     so defiantly laugh at your sharp sentence.
Ach! ohne Zweifel hast du so gedacht:
     Oh! without doubt you so imagine:
wie jammern mich doch die verkehrten Herzen!
     how I do bemoan these depraved hearts!

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Wer sollte sich demnach
wohl hier zu leben wünschen,
     Who henceforth could
     well wish to live here
wenn man nur Hass und Ungemach
vor seine Liebe sieht?
     when one can see only
     hate and adversity countering his love?
Doch, weil ich auch den Feind
wie meinen besten Freund
nach Gottes Vorschrift lieben soll,
     Yet, since according to God’s instruction
     I should also love my enemy
     as my best friend,
so flieht mein Herze Zorn und Groll
     so flee from my heart ire and grievance
und wünscht allein bei Gott zu leben,
     and wish simply to live with God,
der selbst die Liebe heißt.
     who himself is called love.
Ach, eintrachtvoller Geist,
     Oh, harmonious spirit,
wenn wird er dir doch nur sein Himmelszion geben?
     when indeed will he grant you his heavenly Zion?

5. ARIA ALTO
Mir ekelt mehr zu leben,
     I am dismayed to live further,
drum nimm mich, Jesu, hin!
     thus accept me, Jesus!
Mir graut vor allen Sünden,
     I cower before all sins,
laß mich dies Wohnhaus finden,
     let me find that dwelling place
wo selbst ich ruhig bin.
     where I myself am at peace.
