Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe,
I stand with one foot in the grave,
Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt,
Do with me, God, according to your goodness,
bald fällt der kranke Leib hinein,
soon the afflicted body will fall within,
hilf mir in meinen Leiden,
help me in my suffering,
komm, lieber Gott, wenn dir's gefällt,
come, dear God, if it pleases you,
was ich dich bitt, versag mir nicht.
what I beg of you, do not withhold from me.
ich habe schon mein Haus bestellt,
I have already put my house in order,
Wenn sich mein Seel soll scheiden,
When my soul shall depart
so nimm sie, Herr, in deine Händ‘.
so take it, Lord, into your hands.
nur laß mein Ende selig sein!
just let my ending be blessed!
ist alles gut, wenn gut das End.
all is well, that ends well.

Mein Angst und Not,
My fear and distress,
mein Leben und mein Tod
my life and my death,
steht, liebster Gott, in deinen Händen;
rest, dearest God, in your hands;
so wirst du auch auf mich
dein gnädig Auge wenden.
thus you will turn your eye
of mercy upon me.
Willst du mich meiner Sünden wegen
If you will, due to my sins,
ins Krankenbette legen,
lay me on the sickbed,
mein Gott, so bitt ich dich,
my God, then I beg you
laß deine Güte größer sein
let your goodness be greater
als die Gerechtigkeit;
than justice;
doch hast du mich darzu versehn,
indeed you have equipped me for this,
daß mich mein Leiden soll verzehren,
that my suffering might be abated,
ich bin bereit,
I am ready,
dein Wille soll an mir gescheh‘n,
your will can transpire for me,
verschone nicht und fahre fort,
spare me not and go forth,
laß meine Not nicht lange währen;
let my distress not last long;
je länger hier, je später dort.
the longer here, the later I get there.

Herr, was du willt, soll mir gefallen,
Lord, whatever you desire, shall please me,
weil doch dein Rat am besten gilt.
for your counsel is most valid indeed.
In der Freude, in dem Leide,
In joy, in suffering,
im Sterben, in Bitten und Flehn
in dying, in pleading and supplication
laß mir allemal geschehn,
let always transpire for me,
Herr, wie du willt.
Lord, as you desire.
5. RECITATIVO BASSO
Und willst du, daß ich nicht soll kranken,
And if you desire that I not be ill,
so werd ich dir von Herzen danken;
then will I thank you from the heart;
doch aber gib mir auch dabei,
but still grant me also alongside that
daß auch in meinem frischen Leibe
that within my refreshed body also
die Seele sonder Krankheit sei
my soul be without ailment
und allezeit gesund verbleibe.
and always remain healthy.
Nimm sie durch Geist und Wort in acht,
Make it aware through spirit and word,
denn dieses ist mein Heil,
that this is my salvation,
und wenn mir Leib und Seel verschmacht,
and when my body and soul are parched,
so bist du, Gott, mein Trost und meines Herzens Teil!
then you, God, are my comfort and my heart's portion!

Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir
Lord, as you desire, so it is right by me,
im Leben und im Sterben;
in life and in dying;
allein zu dir steht mein Begier,
alone in you reside my desires,
Herr, laß mich nicht verderben!
Lord, let me not come to ruin!
Erhalt mich nur in deiner Huld,
Preserve me in your favor
sonst wie du willt, gib mir Geduld,
further as you desire, give me forbearance,
dein Will, der ist der beste.
your will, it is for the best.
