TEXT FOR CANTATA 144
Nimm, was dein ist, und gehe hin
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Nimm, was dein ist, und gehe hin.
Take what is yours and go forth.

2. ARIA ALTO
Murre nicht,
     Do not grumble
lieber Christ,
     dear Christian
wenn was nicht nach Wunsch geschicht;
     when what is wished is not delivered;
sondern sei mit dem zufrieden,
rather, be at peace with that
was dir dein Gott hat beschieden,
     which God has allotted you,
er weiß, was dir nützlich ist.
he knows what is of benefit to you.

3. CORALE
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
Whatever God does, is rightly done,
es bleibt gerecht sein Wille;
     his will remains ever righteous;
wie er fängt meine Sachen an,
however he commences with my affairs
will ich ihm halten stille.
I will remain silent before him.
Er ist mein Gott,
     He is my God,
der in der Not
     who in time of need
mich wohl weiß zu erhalten:

knows well how to preserve me:
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
thus I simply let him prevail.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Wo die Genügsamkeit regiert
     Where ever contentment reigns
und überall das Ruder führt,
     and everywhere steers the rudder,
da ist der Mensch vergnügt
there a person is at ease
mit dem, wie es Gott fügt.
     with whatever God asserts.
Dagegen, wo die Ungenügsamkeit das Urteil spricht,
     Conversely, where discontentment casts judgment,
da stellt sich Gram und Kummer ein,
     there grief and misery emerge,
das Herz will nicht zufrieden sein,
the heart will not be at peace,
und man gedenket nicht daran:
and one does not ponder this:
was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan.
whatever God does, is rightly done.

 5. ARIA SOPRANO
Genügsamkeit
     Contentedness
ist ein Schatz in diesem Leben,
is a treasure in this life,
welcher kann Vergnügung geben
     which can allow pleasure
in der größten Traurigkeit,
     in the greatest sorrow,
Genügsamkeit.
     contentedness.
Denn es lässet sich in Allem
     For all things grant
Gottes Fügung wohl gefallen
     pleasure in God’s providence,
Genügsamkeit.
     contentedness.

6. CORALE
Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit,
What my God wills, may that always occur,
sein Will, der ist der beste.
his will, is for the best.
Zu helfen den'n er ist bereit,
He is prepared to help those
die an ihn glauben feste.
     who firmly believe in him.
Er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
He aids away from distress, this devoted God,
und züchtiget mit Maßen.
     and chastises in moderation.
Wer Gott vertraut, fest auf ihn baut,
Whoever trusts in God, securely builds on him,
den will er nicht verlassen.
     him will he not abandon.
