TEXT FOR CANTATA 141
Das ist je gewißlich wahr
Georg Philipp Telemann (1719-1720)
(previously attributed to J. S. Bach)

1.   CORO
Das ist je gewißlich wahr
     It is forever certainly true
und ein teuer wertes Wort,
     and a precious, valuable word,
daß Christus Jesus kommen ist in die Welt,
that Christ Jesus came into the world
Sünder selig zu machen.
     to make sinners blessed.

2.  ARIA TENORE
Jesus ist der Menschen Heil.
     Jesus is humanity's salvation.
Doch wer dieses will genießen,
     Indeed, whoever will savor this
muß sich wahrlich auch entschließen,
     must also be truly resolved
ohne falschen Heuchelschein
     without false pretence
ihm alleine treu zu sein,
to be loyal to him alone,
sonst wird ihm dies nicht zu Teil.
otherwise he will receive no share in this.

3.  RECITATIVO ALTO
Wir müssen recht im Geiste
nach ihm fragen und nicht nur:
We must rightly question them in the Spirit
     and not only state:
hier ist Christus sagen,
     "Here Christ is saying…,"
weil alle Heuchler sich mit Erklärung tragen,
     for all hypocrites carry explanations,
sonst schänden wir das Evangelium
     otherwise we belie the Gospel
als uns‘ren besten Ruhm:
     as our best merit:
an diesem aber merken wir,
but one thing we do note,
daß, so wir sein Gebot betrachten,
that when we respect his Commandments
und uns nach selbigem unsträflich achten
     and keep them ourselves unwantonly
daß wir den Heiland kennen.
     then we know the Savior.
Dagegen läßt sich jemand einen Christen nennen,
Conversely, if someone calls himself a Christian
und gibt der Sünde noch Gehör,
but still gives ear to sin,
der ist ein Lügner und nichts mehr.
he is a liar and nothing more.

4.  ARIA BASSO
Jesu, Trost der Geistlicharmen,
Jesus, comfort of the spiritually poor,
laß dich uns're Not erbarmen,
     have mercy in our distress,
hilf zur wahren Glaubenskraft.
help us unto true power of faith.
Gib, daß wir uns dir befehlen
Grant that we entrust ourselves to you
und kein falsches Wort erwählen,
     and choose no false words
daran das Verderben haft't.
     that could cause our ruin.
