1. CORO
Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin,
In peace and joy I journey there,
in Gottes Willen;
by the will of God;
getrost ist mir mein Herz und Sinn,
comforted are my heart and mind,
sanft und stille;
tender and still;
wie Gott mir verheißen hat,
as God has promised me,
der Tod ist mein Schlaf geworden.
death has become my slumber.
2. ARIA ALTO
Ich will auch mit gebrochnen Augen
I will, even with these splintered eyes
nach dir, mein treuer Heiland, sehn.
look upon you, my faithful Savior.
Wenngleich des Leibes Bau zerbricht,
Even though bodily stature is crushed,
doch fällt mein Herz und Hoffen nicht.
indeed my heart and hope do not fail.
Mein Jesus sieht auf mich im Sterben
My Jesus looks over me in dying
und lässet mir kein Leid geschehn.
and lets no affliction befall me.

daß ein Herz vor der dem Fleischverhassten Gruft
und gar des Todes Schmerz sich nicht entsetzet!

Das macht Christus, wahr' Gottes Sohn,

An unfathomable light

ein höchst erwünscht Verheißungswort:
a highly desired word of promise:
wer glaubt, soll selig werden.
whoever believes shall be blessed.

O unerschöpfter Schatz der Güte,
O inexhaustible treasure of goodness
so sich uns Menschen aufgetan:
thus opened up before us, humanity:
es wird der Welt,
so Zorn und Fluch auf sich geladen,
for the world, so laden
with ire and malice, will
ein Stuhl der Gnaden
und Siegeszeichen aufgestellt,
a throne of grace
and symbol of victory be erected,
und jedes gläubige Gemüte
wird in sein Gnadenreich geladen.
and every believing soul
will be invited into his kingdom of grace.

Er ist das Heil und selig Licht
He is the salvation and blessed light
für die Heiden,
zu erleuchten, die dich kennen nicht,
to enlighten the gentiles
who know him not,
