TEXT FOR CANTATA 124
Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht,
I will not leave my Jesus,
weil er sich für mich gegeben,
for he has given himself for me,
so erfordert meine Pflicht,
     thus obligation compels me
Klettenweis an ihm zu kleben.
to cling to him as a leech.
Er ist meines Lebens Licht,
He is the light of my life,
meinen Jesum lass ich nicht.
I will not leave my Jesus.

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Solange sich ein Tropfen Blut
As long as one drop of blood
in Herz und Adern reget,
flows through my heart and veins,
soll Jesus nur allein
mein Leben und mein alles sein.
     only Jesus alone shall
be my life and my all.
Mein Jesus, der an mir so große Dinge tut:
My Jesus, who does such great things for me:
ich kann ja nichts als meinen Leib und Leben
ihm zum Geschenke geben.
I can, indeed, present nothing to him as a gift
other than my body and life.

3. ARIA TENORE
Und wenn der harte Todesschlag
     And when the harsh deathblow
die Sinnen schwächt, die Glieder rühret,
weakens the mind, stirs the limbs,
wenn der dem Fleisch verhasste Tag
when it on that flesh loathing day
nur Furcht und Schrecken mit sich führet,
     wields only fear and dismay,
doch tröstet sich die Zuversicht:
     conversely my confidence is consoled:
ich lasse meinen Jesum nicht.
I will not leave my Jesus.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Doch ach!
     But note!
Welch schweres Ungemach
     What harsh adversity
empfindet noch allhier die Seele?
does the soul still perceive everywhere?
Wird nicht die hart gekränkte Brust
Will not the severely inflicted breast
zu einer Wüstenei und Marterhöhle
     become a wasteland or dungeon
bei Jesu schmerzlichstem Verlust?
compared to Jesus' most bitter sacrifice?
Allein mein Geist sieht gläubig auf
My spirit simply peers upward in faith
und an den Ort, wo Glaub und Hoffnung prangen,
and to that place, where faith and hope gleam,
allwo ich nach vollbrachtem Lauf
to where, following a successful race, I
dich, Jesu, ewig soll umfangen.
     shall ever embrace you, Jesus.

5. ARIA DUETTO SOPRANO ED ALTO
Entziehe dich eilends, mein Herze, der Welt,
Hastily withdraw from the world, my heart,
du findest im Himmel dein wahres Vergnügen.
you will find in Heaven your true delight.
Wenn künftig dein Auge den Heiland erblickt,
When once your eye perceives the Savior,
so wird erst dein sehnendes Herze erquickt,
only then will your longing heart be quenched,
so wird es in Jesu zufriedengestellt.
then it will be contented in Jesus.

6. CORALE
Jesum lass ich nicht von mir,
I will not let Jesus away from me,
geh ihm ewig an der Seiten;
     walking ever at his side;
Christus lässt mich für und für
Christ allows me, forever and ever
zu den Lebensbächlein leiten.
to be led beside the stream of life.
Selig, der mit mir so spricht:
Blessed is he who can thus say with me:
Meinen Jesum lass ich nicht.
I will not leave my Jesus.
