Das neugeborne Kindelein,
The newborn little child,
das herzeliebe Jesulein
the darling baby Jesus,
bringt abermal ein neues Jahr
once again brings a new year
der auserwählten Christenschar.
unto the chosen Christian throng.
2. ARIA BASSO
O Menschen, die ihr täglich sündigt,
O humanity, you who sin each day,
ihr sollt der Engel Freude sein.
you shall be the joy of angels.
Ihr jubilierendes Geschrei,
You jubilant clamor,
daß Gott mit euch versöhnet sei,
that God be reconciled to you
hat euch den süßen Trost verkündigt.

Die Engel, welche sich zuvor
The angels, which earlier
vor euch als vor Verfluchten scheuen,
shunned you, as those condemned,
erfüllen nun die Luft im höhern Chor,
now fill the air in lofty chorus,
um über euer Heil sich zu erfreuen.
to rejoice for your salvation.
Gott, so euch aus dem Paradies
aus englischer Gemeinschaft stieß,
God, thus thrust before you away from paradise,
from the communion of angels,
läßt euch nun wiederum auf Erden
lets you on earth in turn
durch seine Gegenwart vollkommen selig werden:
become wholly blissful through his presence:
so danket nun mit vollem Munde
so now give thanks with full voice
vor die gewünschte Zeit im neuen Bunde.
for the desired time in the new covenant.

Ist Gott versöhnt und unser Freund,
God is reconciled to us and is our friend,
o wohl uns, die wir an ihn glauben,
O blessed are we who believe in him,
was kann uns tun der arge Feind?
what can the dismal foe do to us?
Sein Grimm kann unsern Trost nicht rauben;
His wrath cannot rob our solace;
trotz Teufel und der Höllen Pfort,
despite the Devil and the portal of Hell,
ihr Wüten wird sie wenig nützen,
their fury will be of little use,
das Jesulein ist unser Hort.
the baby Jesus is our refuge.
Gott ist mit uns und will uns schützen.
God is with us and will protect us.

Dies ist ein Tag, den selbst der Herr gemacht,
This is a day which the Lord himself has made,
der seinen Sohn in diese Welt gebracht.

O selge Zeit, die nun erfüllt!
O blessed time which is now fulfilled!
O gläubigs Warten, das nunmehr gestillt!
O faithful waiting, no more to be quenched!
O Glaube, der sein Ende sieht!
O faith, which beholds its goal!
O Liebe, die Gott zu sich zieht!
O love, which God draws unto himself!
O Freudigkeit, so durch die Trübsal dringt
O joyfulness, so penetrating the gloom
und Gott der Lippen Opfer bringt!
and bringing God the lips' offering!

Es bringt das rechte Jubeljahr,
He brings a right year of jubilee,
was trauern wir denn immerdar?
what then anymore do we mourn?
Frisch auf! itzt ist es Singenszeit,
Rise afresh! now is the time for singing
das Jesulein wendt alles Leid.
the baby Jesus transforms all sorrow.
