TEXT FOR CANTATA 112
Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt,
The Lord is my abiding shepherd,
hält mich in seiner Hute,
he keeps me in his shelter,
darin mir gar nichts mangeln wird
therein I will lack nothing at all
irgend an einem Gute,
     of any sort of good,
er weidet mich ohn Unterlass,
he leads me to pasture without ceasing
darauf wächst das wohlschmeckend Gras
seines heilsamen Wortes.
     to where the delectable grass
     of his healing word grows.

2. ARIA ALTO
Zum reinen Wasser er mich weist,
He guides me to clear waters
das mich erquicken tue.
     that do refresh me.
Das ist sein fronheiliger Geist,
It is his holy servant spirit
der macht mich wohlgemute.
that makes me light of heart.
Er führet mich auf rechter Straß
He leads me upon the proper road
seiner Geboten ohn Ablass
     of his commandments without exhausting
von wegen seines Namens willen.
that owing the will of his name.

3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Und ob ich wandelt im finstern Tal,
And although I wander in the valley of darkness
fürcht ich kein Ungelücke
     I fear no misfortune
in Verfolgung, Leiden, Trübsal
     of persecution, suffering, tribulation
und dieser Welte Tücke,
     nor malice of this world,
denn du bist bei mir stetiglich,
for you are constantly beside me,
dein Stab und Stecken trösten mich,
your staff and rod comfort me,
auf dein Wort ich mich lasse.
     I rely on your word.

4. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO E TENORE
Du bereitest für mir einen Tisch
You prepare a table for me
vor mein' Feinden allenthalben,
before my enemies on all sides,
machst mein Herze unverzagt und frisch,
make my heart dauntless and refreshed,
mein Haupt tust du mir salben
     you do anoint my head
mit deinem Geist, der Freuden Öl,
with your spirit, the oil of joy,
und schenkest voll ein meiner Seel
     and pour full my soul
deiner geistlichen Freuden.
     with your spiritual joys.

5. CORO
Gutes und die Barmherzigkeit
     Goodness and compassion
folgen mir nach im Leben,
     follow after me in life,
und ich werd bleiben allezeit
     and I will remain always
im Haus des Herren eben,
in the house of the Lord ever,
auf Erd in christlicher Gemein
     upon earth in Christian congregation
und nach dem Tod da werd ich sein
and following death I will be there
bei Christo meinem Herren.
     beside Christ my Lord.
