Text for Cantata 11
Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Himmelfahrts-Oratorium (Ascension Oratorio)

1. CORO
Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen,
     Praise God in his realms,
preiset ihn in seinen Ehren,
     praise him in his glory,
rühmet ihn in seiner Pracht;
     extol him in his splendor;
sucht sein Lob recht zu vergleichen,
     seek to truly match his praise,
wenn ihr mit gesamten Chören
     as you, with assembled choirs,
ihm ein Lied zu Ehren macht!
     compose him a song of honor!

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Der Herr Jesus hub seine Hände auf
und segnete seine Jünger,
     The Lord Jesus raised up his hands
     and blessed his disciples,
und es geschah, da er sie segnete,
schied er von ihnen.
     and it came to pass,
     when he had blessed them,
     that he departed from them.

3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Ach, Jesu, ist dein Abschied schon so nah?
     Alas, Jesus, is your departure already so close?
Ach, ist denn schon die Stunde da,
     Alas, is the hour already here
da wir dich von uns lassen sollen?
     in which we shall let you leave us?
Ach, siehe, wie die heißen Tränen
     Oh, behold, how the burning tears
von unsern blassen Wangen rollen,
     roll down our pallid cheeks,
wie wir uns nach dir sehnen,
     how we yearn for you,
wie uns fast aller Trost gebricht.
     how our solace succumbs almost entirely.
Ach, weiche doch noch nicht!
     Oh, truly, do not yet vanish!

4. ARIA ALTO
Ach, bleibe doch, mein liebstes Leben,
     Oh, do stay, dearest of my life,
ach, fliehe nicht so bald von mir!
     oh, flee not from me so soon!
Dein Abschied und dein frühes Scheiden
     Your farewell and your early departure
bringt mir das allergrößte Leiden,
     bring upon me the ever greatest sorrow,
ach ja, so bleibe doch noch hier;
     oh indeed, do still remain here;
sonst werd ich ganz von Schmerz umgeben.
     lest I be completely consumed by pain.

5. RECITATIVO TENORE
Und ward aufgehaben zusehends und fuhr auf gen Himmel,
     And he receded from sight and ascended into heaven,
eine Wolke nahm ihn weg vor ihren Augen,
     a cloud obstructed him from their eyes,
und er sitzet zur rechten Hand Gottes.
     and he is seated at the right hand of God.

6. CORALE
Nun lieget alles unter dir,
     Now all lies below you
dich selbst nur ausgenommen;
     you have only removed yourself;
die Engel müssen für und für
dir aufzuwarten kommen.
     the angels shall forever and ever
     come to attend to you.
Die Fürsten stehn auch auf der Bahn
     Princes too stand at the ready
und sind dir willig untertan;
     and are willingly subject to you;
Luft, Wasser, Feuer, Erden
     air, water, fire, earth
muß dir zu Dienste werden.
     must be at your service.

7a. RECITATIVO TENORE BASSO
Evangelist, Two men in white clothing

Evangelist (T)
Und da sie ihm nachsahen gen Himmel fahren,
     And as they watched him ascend toward heaven
siehe, da stunden bei ihnen zwei Männer in weißen Kleidern,
     behold, there stood before them
     two men dressed in white clothing,
welche auch sagten:
     who also spoke:
The Two Men (TB)
Ihr Männer von Galiläa,
     You men of Galilee
was stehet ihr und sehet gen Himmels?
     why do you stand and look toward heaven?
Dieser Jesus, welcher von euch ist aufgenommen gen Himmel,
      This Jesus, who was taken from you into Heaven,
wird kommen,
     will return
wie ihr ihn gesehen habt gen Himmel fahren.
     just as you saw him ascend to Heaven.

7b. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ach ja! so komme bald zurück:
     Ah yes! do come back soon:
tilg einst mein trauriges Gebärden,
     eliminate my mournful gestures at once,
sonst wird mir jeder Augenblick
     lest each moment for me be
verhaßt und Jahren ähnlich werden.
     detestable and years the same.

7c. RECITATIVO TENORE
Evangelist (T)
Sie aber beteten ihn an,
     They then offered him worship,
wandten um gen Jerusalem von dem Berge,
     turned back toward Jerusalem from the mount
der da heißet der Ölberg,
     that was called Olivet,
welcher ist nahe bei Jerusalem
     which is near Jerusalem
und liegt einen Sabbater-Weg davon,
     located a sabbath day’s journey away,
und sie kehreten wieder
     and they returned once more
gen Jerusalem mit großer Freude.
     to Jerusalem with great joy.

8. ARIA SOPRANO
Jesu, deine Gnadenblicke
     Jesus, the site of your grace
kann ich doch beständig sehn.
     is still ever visible to me.
Deine Liebe bleibt zurücke,
     Your love remains behind
daß ich mich hier in der Zeit
     that I here in this time
an der künftgen Herrlichkeit
schon voraus im Geist erquicke,
     might refresh my spirit already
     in advance of the glory to come,
wenn wir einst dort vor dir stehn.
     when we finally stand there before you.

9. CORALE
Wenn soll es doch geschehen,
     When will it indeed happen,
wenn kömmt die liebe Zeit,
     when comes the precious time,
daß ich ihn werde sehen,
     in which I will see him
in seiner Herrlichkeit?
     in his glory?
Du Tag, wenn wirst du sein,
     You day, when will you be,
daß wir den Heiland grüßen,
     that we greet the Savior,
daß wir den Heiland küssen?
     that we kiss the Savior?
Komm, stelle dich doch ein!
     Come, do present yourself!
