Meine Seel erhebt den Herren

1. CORO
Meine Seel erhebt den Herren,
     My soul magnifies the Lord,
und mein Geist freuet sich Gottes, meines Heilandes;
     and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior;
denn er hat seine elende Magd angesehen.
     for he has looked upon his lowly maiden.
Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskind.
     Behold, henceforth every child’s child shall praise me blessed.
 
2. ARIA SOPRANO
Herr, der du stark und mächtig bist,
     Lord, you who are strong and mighty,
Gott, dessen Name heilig ist,
     God, whose name is holy,
wie wunderbar sind deine Werke!
     how wonderful are your works!
Du siehest mich Elenden an,
     You look upon me, a lowly one,
du hast an mir so viel getan,
     you have done so much for me,
daß ich nicht alles zähl und merke.
     that I cannot count or note it all.
 
3. RECITATIVO TENORE
Des Höchsten Güt und Treu
     The Most High’s goodness and faithfulness
wird alle Morgen neu
     is every morning new
und währet immer für und für
     and endures forever and ever
bei denen, die allhier auf seine Hilfe schaun
     for those, who always look to his aid
und ihm in wahrer Furcht vertraun.
     and in true fear, trust in him.
Hingegen übt er auch Gewalt
     However, he also wields strength
mit seinem Arm
     with his arm
an denen, welche weder kalt noch warm
im Glauben und im Lieben sein;
     upon them, who are neither cold nor warm
     in faith or in love;
die nacket, bloß und blind,
     they, naked, bare and blind,
die voller Stolz und Hoffart sind,
     they, full of pride and haughtiness,
will seine Hand wie Spreu zerstreun.
     will be strewn like chaff from his hand.
 
4. ARIA BASSO
Gewaltige stößt Gott vom Stuhl
      God topples the mighty from the throne
hinunter in den Schwefelpfuhl;
     downward into the sulfuric slough;
die Niedern pflegt Gott zu erhöhen,
     God cares for the lowly, lifting them up,
daß sie wie Stern am Himmel stehen.
     that they stand like stars in the heavens.
Die Reichen lässt Gott bloß und leer,
     God leaves the rich bare and empty,
die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gaben,
     he fills the hungry with gifts,
daß sie auf seinem Gnadenmeer
     that they, in his sea of grace,
stets Reichtum und die Fülle haben.
     continually have richness and abundance.

Er denket der Barmherzigkeit
     He considers mercy
und hilft seinem Diener Israel auf.
     and helps up his servant Israel.
 
6. RECITATIVO TENORE
Was Gott den Vätern alter Zeiten
geredet und verheißen hat,
     What God described and promised
     to our forebears in ancient times
erfüllt er auch im Werk und in der Tat.
     he also fulfills in works and in deeds.
Was Gott dem Abraham,
als er zu ihm in seine Hütten kam,
versprochen und geschworen,
     What God promised and swore to Abraham
     as he appeared to him in his tents,
ist, da die Zeit erfüllet war, geschehen.
     has occurred, as was the time of fulfillment.
Sein Same mußte sich so sehr wie Sand am Meer
und Stern am Firmament ausbreiten,
     His seed would spread forth 
     as vast as the sands in the sea
     and stars in the firmament,
der Heiland ward geboren,
     the Savior would be born,
das ewge Wort ließ sich im Fleische sehen,
     the eternal word let itself be seen in the flesh,
das menschliche Geschlecht von Tod
und allem Bösen und von des Satans Sklaverei
aus lauter Liebe zu erlösen;
     to redeem the human species 
     from death and all things evil
     and from Satan’s slavery, out of pure love;
drum bleibt's darbei,
     thus it only follows,
daß Gottes Wort voll Gnad und Wahrheit sei.
     that God’s word be full of grace and truth. 

7. CORALE
Lob und Preis sei Gott dem Vater und dem Sohn
     Laud and praise be to God the Father and the Son
und dem Heilgen Geiste,
     and to the Holy Spirit,
wie es war im Anfang, jetzt und immerdar
     as it was in the beginning, now and forever
und von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit. Amen.
     and from eternity to eternity. Amen.
