Text for Cantata 9
Es ist das Heil uns kommen her
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Es ist das Heil uns kommen her
     Salvation has come unto us
von Gnad und lauter Güte.
     from grace and pure goodness.
Die Werk, die helfen nimmermehr,
     Works, which help nevermore,
sie mögen nicht behüten.
     they cannot protect us.
Der Glaub sieht Jesum Christum an,
     Faith looks unto Jesus Christ
der hat g'nug für uns all getan,
     who has acted sufficiently for us all,
er ist der Mittler worden.
     he has become the mediator.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Gott gab uns ein Gesetz,
     God gave us the law,
doch waren wir zu schwach,
     yet we were too weak
daß wir es hätten halten können.
     to ever be able to keep it.
Wir gingen nur den Sünden nach,
     We simply pursued sin,
kein Mensch war fromm zu nennen;
     no pious person was to be named;
der Geist blieb an dem Fleische kleben
     the spirit continued clinging to the flesh
und wagte nicht zu widerstreben.
     and would not risk resisting.
Wir sollten in Gesetze gehen
     We should have turned to the law
und dort als wie in einem Spiegel sehn,
     and there, as if looking in a mirror
wie unsere Natur unartig sei;
     we would have seen that
     our nature was wicked;
und dennoch blieben wir dabei.
     and evenso we remained at it.
Aus eigner Kraft war niemand fähig,
     Of his own power, no one was able
der Sünden Unart zu verlassen,
     to abandon the wickedness of sin,
er möcht auch alle Kraft zusammenfassen.
     even if he had mustered up every strength.

3. ARIA TENORE
Wir waren schon zu tief gesunken,
     We had already sunk too low,
der Abgrund schluckt uns völlig ein,
     the abyss swallowed us up completely,
die Tiefe drohte schon den Tod,
     the depths threatened imminent death
und dennoch konnt in solcher Not
uns keine Hand behilflich sein.
     and moreover, no hand
     could assist us in such plight.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Doch mußte das Gesetz erfüllet werden;
     But the law had to be fulfilled;
deswegen kam das Heil der Erden,
     thereby salvation came to earth,
des Höchsten Sohn, der hat es selbst erfüllt
     the Son of the Most High,
     he himself fulfilled this
und seines Vaters Zorn gestillt.
     and stilled his father’s wrath.
Durch sein unschuldig Sterben
     Through his innocent dying
ließ er uns Hilf erwerben.
     he procured our aid.
Wer nun demselben traut,
     Whoever now trusts in this,
wer auf sein Leiden baut,
     whoever builds upon his suffering,
der gehet nicht verloren.
     he will not be lost.
Der Himmel ist für den erkoren,
     Heaven has been preordained for him
der wahren Glauben mit sich bringt
     who bears upon himself a true faith
und fest um Jesu Arme schlingt.
     and securely flings his arms around Jesus.

5. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ALTO
Herr, du siehst statt guter Werke
     Lord, you see beyond good works
auf des Herzens Glaubensstärke,
     into the hearts of those strong in faith,
nur den Glauben nimmst du an.
     you take in only the faithful.
Nur der Glaube macht gerecht,
     Only faith makes one righteous,
alles andre scheint zu schlecht,
     all else will appear inferior
als daß es uns helfen kann.
     to that which can help us.

6. RECITATIVO BASSO
Wenn wir die Sünd aus dem Gesetz erkennen,
     If we recognize our sin according to the law
so schlägt es das Gewissen nieder;
     our conscience is beaten down;
doch ist das unser Trost zu nennen,
     however it should be noted as our comfort
daß wir im Evangelio
     that through the Gospel we
gleich wieder froh und freudig werden:
     will instantly become glad and joyful again:
dies stärket unsern Glauben wieder.
     this bolsters our faith once more.
Drauf hoffen wir der Zeit,
     Thus we hope for that time
die Gottes Gütigkeit uns zugesaget hat,
     which God’s goodness has promised us,
doch aber auch aus weisem Rat
     yet however, and for good reason,
die Stunde uns verschwiegen.
     the hour remains concealed from us.
Jedoch, wir lassen uns begnügen,
     Nonetheless, we remain content,
er weiß es, wenn es nötig ist,
     he knows, when it is prudent,
und brauchet keine List an uns;
     and brings no deceit upon us;
wir dürfen auf ihn bauen
     we may build upon him
und ihm allein vertrauen.
     and trust in him alone.

7. CORALE
Ob sichs anließ, als wollt er nicht,
     If it appears he is not willing,
laß dich es nicht erschrecken;

     let it not alarm you;
denn wo er ist am besten mit,
     for where he is the most present
da will ers nicht entdecken.
     there he wants not to reveal it.
Sein Wort laß dir gewisser sein,
     His word lets you be certain,
und ob dein Herz spräch lauter Nein,
     and even if your heart speaks loudly in protest
so laß doch dir nicht grauen.
     still allow yourself no dread.
