Text for Cantata 99
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan (II)
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, it is rightly done,
es bleibt gerecht sein Wille;
     his will remains righteous;
wie er fängt meine Sachen an,
     however he commences with my concerns
will ich ihm halten stille.
     I quietly wait upon him.
Er ist mein Gott,
     He is my God
der in der Not
     who in distress
mich wohl weiß zu erhalten;
     knows well how to preserve me;
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
     thus I just let him prevail.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Sein Wort der Wahrheit stehet fest
     His word of truth stands fast
und wird mich nicht betrügen,
     and will not betray me,
weil es die Gläubigen nicht fallen
noch verderben läßt.

     for it allows believers to neither fall nor perish.
Ja, weil es mich den Weg zum Leben führet,
     Yes, since it leads me along the path to life,
so faßt mein Herze sich und lässet sich begnügen
     so my heart takes courage and contents itself
an Gottes Vatertreu und Huld,
     in God's fatherly devotion and favor,
und hat Geduld,
     and has patience
wenn mich ein Unfall rühret.
     when mishaps befall me.
Gott kann mit seinen Allmachtshänden
     God can, with his almighty hands,
mein Unglück wenden.
     transform my misfortune.

3. ARIA TENORE
Erschüttre dich nur nicht, verzagte Seele,
     Be not unsettled, you despairing soul,
wenn dir der Kreuzeskelch so bitter schmeckt!
     when the cross' chalice tastes so bitter!
Gott ist dein weiser Arzt und Wundermann,
     God is your wise physician and miracle-worker,
so dir kein tödlich Gift einschenken kann,
     thus no deadly poison can be poured for you
obgleich die Süßigkeit verborgen steckt.
     even if concealed by sweetness.

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Nun, der von Ewigkeit geschloß'ne Bund
     Now the covenant, secured in eternity,
bleibt meines Glaubens Grund.
     remains the foundation of my faith.
Er spricht mit Zuversicht
     It speaks with confidence
im Tod und Leben:
     in death and life:
Gott ist mein Licht,
     God is my light,
ihm will ich mich ergeben.
     to him I will surrender.
Und haben alle Tage
     And though all days have
gleich ihre eigne Plage,
     there each separate plights,
doch auf das überstandne Leid
     regardless, after endured suffering
wenn man genug geweinet,
     when one has wept enough
kommt endlich die Errettungszeit,
     finally comes the moment of deliverance
da Gottes treuer Sinn erscheinet.
     when God's devout intent is revealed.

5. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ED ALTO
Wenn des Kreuzes Bitterkeiten
     When the bitterness of the cross
mit des Fleisches Schwachheit streiten,
     battles with the weakness of the flesh,
ist es dennoch wohlgetan.
     it is even so rightly done.
Wer das Kreuz durch falschen Wahn
sich vor unerträglich schätzet,

     Whoever, through contrived delusion,
     considers the cross unendurable
wird auch künftig nicht ergötzet.
     will also later not feast.

6. CORALE
Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan,
     Whatever God does, it is rightly done,
dabei will ich verbleiben.
     by this I do remain.
Es mag mich auf die rauhe Bahn
     I may be on the rocky path
Not, Tod und Elend treiben,
     driven by distress, death and misery,
so wird Gott mich
     so God will
ganz väterlich
     fully, as a father
in seinen Armen halten;
     hold me in his arms;
drum laß ich ihn nur walten.
     thus I just let him prevail.
