Text for Cantata 97
In allem meinen Taten
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
In allem meinen Taten
     In all my deeds
laß ich den Höchsten raten,
     I let the Most-High counsel,
der alles kann und hat;
     who can do all and has;
er muß zu allen Dingen,
     he must, in all things,
solls anders wohl gelingen,
     if they shall at all succeed,
selbst geben Rat und Tat.
     himself grant counsel and deed.

2. ARIA BASSO
Nichts ist es spät und frühe
     It is never too late or early
um alle sein Mühe,
     for any of his efforts,
mein Sorgen ist umsonst.
     my worries are unwarranted.
Er mags mit meinen Sachen
     He desires, that my doings
nach seinem Willen machen,
     act according to his will,
ich stells in seine Gunst.
     I rely on his good graces.

3. RECITATIVO TENORE
Es kann mir nichts geschehen,
     Nothing can happen to me,
als was er hat ersehen,
     but that which he selects,
und was mir selig ist:
     and what a blessing to me:
ich nehm es, wie ers gibet;
     I receive it, as he bestows it:
was ihm von mir beliebet,
     whatever he fancies of me,
das hab ich auch erkiest.
     this I too have elected.

4. ARIA TENORE
Ich traue seiner Gnaden,
     I trust in his grace,
die mich vor allem Schaden,
vor allem Übel schützt.

     which protects me
     from all injury and all evil.
Leb ich nach seinen Gesetzen,
     If I live by his commandments,
so wird mich nichts verletzen,
     then nothing can harm me,
nichts fehlen, was mir nützt.
     nor can fail me, which is my benefit.

5. RECITATIVO ALTO
Er wolle meiner Sünden
in Gnaden mich entbinden,

     He will through grace
     unbind me from my sins
durchstreichen meine Schuld!
     crossing out my guilt!
Er wird auf mein Verbrechen
nicht stracks das Urteil sprechen

     He will not immediately impose judgment
     on my trespasses
und haben noch Geduld.
     and still has patience.

6. ARIA ALTO
Leg ich mich späte nieder,
     I lay me down late
erwache frühe wieder,
     arising early once more,
lieg und ziehe fort,
     reclining or dragged forth,
in Schwachheit und in Banden,
     in weakness and in bondage,
und was mir stößt zuhanden,
     and whatever is thrust upon me,
so tröstet mich sein Wort.
     so I find comfort in his word.

7. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO E BASSO
Hat er es denn beschlossen,
     If he has then so ordained
so will ich unverdrossen
     so shall I undaunted
an mein Verhängnis gehn!
     proceed toward my doom!
Kein Unfall unter allen
     No disaster amidst them all
soll mir zu harte fallen,
     shall impact me too severely
ich will ihn überstehn.
     I will survive them.

8. ARIA SOPRANO
Ich hab mich ihm ergeben
     I have devoted myself to him
zu sterben und zu leben,
     to die and to live,
sobald er mir gebeut.
     as soon he compels me.
Es sei heut oder morgen,
     Be it today or tomorrow,
dafür laß ich ihn sorgen;
    I let him worry about this;
er weiß die rechte Zeit.
    he knows the proper time.

9. CORALE
So sein nun, Seele, deine
     So now, Soul, be your own
und traue dem alleine,
     and trust in him alone
der dich erschaffen hat;
     who has created you;
Es gehe, wie es gehe,
     What happens, will happen,
dein Vater in der Höhe
     your father on high
weiß allen Sachen Rat.
     knows counsel for all things.
