Text for CANTATA 93
Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten
Whoever just lets dear God prevail
und hoffet auf ihn allezeit,
and hopes in him at all times,
den wird er wunderlich erhalten
will be wondrously sustained by him
in allem Kreuz und Traurigkeit.
     through every cross and sorrow.
Wer Gott, dem Allerhöchsten, traut,
Whoever trusts in God, the ever most-high,
der hat auf keinen Sand gebaut.
      has not built upon sand.

2. CORALE E RECITATIVO BASSO
Was helfen uns die schweren Sorgen?
Of what help to us are these grave worries?
Sie drücken nur das Herz mit Zentnerpein,
mit tausend Angst und Schmerz.

They simply press upon the heart
     a hundred-pound pain,
     with thousandfold fears and aching.
Was hilft uns unser Weh und Ach?
Of what help to us are our "woe" and "alas"?
Es bringt nur bittres Ungemach.
It just brings on bitter hardship.
Was hilft es, daß wir alle Morgen
Of what help is it that every morning we
mit Seufzen von dem Schlaf aufstehn
     arise from sleep with moaning
und mit beträntem Angesicht des Nachts zu Bette gehn?
and go to bed at night with a tearstained face?
Wir machen unser Kreuz und Leid
We make our own cross and suffering
durch bange Traurigkeit nur größer.
     even worse through anxious sorrow.
Drum tut ein Christ viel besser,
Thus a Christian can do much better
er trägt sein Kreuz mit christlicher Gelassenheit.
if he bears his cross with Christ-like serenity.

3. ARIA TENORE
Man halte nur ein wenig stille,
     One should just remain calm
wenn sich die Kreuzesstunde naht,
as the hour of the cross draws near,
denn unsres Gottes Gnadenwille
     for our God's gracious will
verlässt uns nie mit Rat und Tat.
never forsakes us in counsel or deed.
Gott, der die Auserwählten kennt,
God who knows the chosen ones,
Gott, der sich uns ein Vater nennt,
God who names himself as father to us,
wird endlich allen Kummer wenden
will in the end transform all distress
und seinen Kindern Hilfe senden.
     and issue his children aid.

4. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ED ALTO
Er kennt die rechten Freudesstunden,
He knows the proper hour for joy,
er weiß wohl, wenn es nützlich sei;
     he well knows when it would be of benefit;
wenn er uns nur hat treu erfunden
as he simply has steadfastly established us
und merket keine Heuchelei,
    and noted no hypocrisy,
so kömmt Gott, eh wir uns verseh'n,
thus God came before we were aware
und lässet uns viel Guts gescheh'n.
and let much good occur for us.

5. CORALE E RECITATIVO E TENORE
Denk nicht in deiner Drangsalhitze,
Think not, while in the heat of tribulation
wenn Blitz und Donner kracht
     while lightning and thunder strike
und die ein schwüles Wetter bange macht,
and when oppressive storms cause alarm,
daß du von Gott verlassen seist.
that you have been abandoned by God.
Gott bleibt auch in der größten Not,
God remains also during the greatest peril,
ja gar bis in den Tod
     yes, even up to death
mit seiner Gnade bei den Seinen.
beside his own, though his grace.
Du darfst nicht meinen,
     You need not think
daß dieser Gott im Schoße sitze,
der täglich wie der reiche Mann,
in Lust und Freuden leben kann.
that one who can live each day as a wealthy man
in pleasure and delight, sits in the lap of God.
Der sich mit stetem Glücke speist,
He who constantly dines on good fortune
bei lauter guten Tagen,
      with excessive easy days
muß oft zuletzt,
nachdem er sich an eitler Lust ergötzt,

after gorging himself on vain delights,
     often in the end must
 „Der Tod in Töpfen" sagen.
     admit "The pot is poisoned."
Die Folgezeit verändert viel!
In subsequent times much will change!
Hat Petrus gleich die ganze Nacht
mit leerer Arbeit zugebracht

Though even Peter spent the whole night
     toiling unsuccessfully
und nichts gefangen:
     and caught nothing:
auf Jesu Wort kann er noch einen Zug erlangen.
upon a word from Jesus he drew a full net.
Drum traue nur in Armut, Kreuz und Pein
Therefore simply trust, through poverty, cross and pain
auf deines Jesu Güte
in the goodness of your Jesus
mit gläubigem Gemüte;
     with a believing soul;
nach Regen gibt er Sonnenschein
     after rain he grants sunshine
und setzet jeglichem sein Ziel.
and reveals to everyone his purpose.

6. ARIA SOPRANO
Ich will auf den Herren schaun
I will look to the Lord
und stets meinem Gott vertraun.
and ever trust in my God.
Er ist der rechte Wundermann.
He is the true miracle worker.
Der die Reichen arm und bloß
und die Armen reich und groß
nach seinem Willen machen kann.

He, by his will, can make the rich poor and meager,
and the poor rich and great.

7. CORALE
Sing, bet und geh auf Gottes Wegen,
Sing, pray and go forth on the path of God,
verricht das Deine nur getreu
     carry out your duty faithfully
und trau des Himmels reichem Segen,
and trust in the rich blessings of Heaven,
so wird er bei dir werden neu;
     thus he will be beside you renewed;
denn welcher seine Zuversicht
auf Gott setzt, den verlässt er nicht.

     for whoever places their confidence
in God will not be forsaken by him.
