Text for Cantata 6
Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Bleib bei uns,
     Remain with us
denn es will Abend werden,
     for it is becoming evening
und der Tag hat sich geneiget.
and the day is almost over.

2. ARIA ALTO
Hochgelobter Gottessohn,
     Highly praised Son of God,
laß es dir nicht sein entgegen,
     let it not oppose you
daß wir itzt vor deinem Thron
eine Bitte niederlegen:

that we presently set down a request
     before your throne:
bleib,ach bleibe unser Licht,
remain, ah do remain our light,
weil die Finsternis einbricht.
     for the darkness closes in.

3. CORALE SOPRANO
Ach bleib bei uns, Herr Jesu Christ,
Ah, remain with us, Lord Jesus Christ,
weil es nun Abend worden ist,
for it has now become evening,
dein göttlich Wort, das helle Licht,
laß ja bei uns auslöschen nicht.

let your divine word, that bright light,
indeed not be extinguished from us.
In dieser letzt'n betrübten Zeit
In this final time of affliction
verleih uns, Herr, Beständigkeit,
     grant us Lord, steadfastness,
daß wir dein Wort und Sakrament
rein b'halten bis an unser End.
that we keep pure your word and sacrament
     until reaching our own end.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Es hat die Dunkelheit an vielen Orten
überhand genommen.
The darkness has in many places
     gained the upperhand.
Woher ist aber dieses kommen?
     Yet why has this occured?
Bloß daher, weil sowohl die Kleinen als die Großen
nicht in Gerechtigkeit vor dir, o Gott, gewandelt,
Precisely thus, because neither the weak nor the great
have walked in righteousness before you, O God,
und wider ihre Christenpflicht gehandelt.
and have dealt contrary to their
     Christian duties.
Drum hast du auch den Leuchter umgestoßen.
Therefore, you also have knocked over the lamp.

5. ARIA TENORE
Jesu, laß uns auf dich sehen,
Jesus, let us gaze on you
daß wir nicht auf den Sündenwegen gehen.
that we not venture upon the path of sin.
Laß das Licht deines Worts uns heller scheinen
Let the light of your word
     shine brighter before us
und dich jederzeit treu meinen.
and deem faithfulness to you at all times.

6. CORALE
Beweis dein Macht, Herr Jesu Christ,
Prove your might, Lord Jesus Christ,
der du Herr aller Herren bist;
     you, who are lord of all lords;
beschirm dein arme Christenheit,
     shelter your feeble Christianity,
daß sie dich lob in Ewigkeit.
that it might praise you in eternity.
