Text for Cantata 84
Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA SOPRANO

Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke,
I take pleasure in my good fortune,
das mir der liebe Gott beschert.
which dear God imparts to me.
Soll ich nicht reiche Fülle haben,
Should I not have rich abundance
so dank ich ihm für kleine Gaben
then I thank him for small gifts
und bin auch nicht derselben wert.
and am not worthy even of these.

2. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Gott ist mir ja nichts schuldig,
     God indeed owes me nothing,
und wenn er mir was gibt,
and if he grants me anything
so zeigt er mir, daß er mich liebt;
     he just shows me that he loves me;
ich kann mir nichts bei ihm verdienen
there is nothing I can do to deserve this of him,
denn was ich tu, ist meine Pflicht.
for anything I do is my obligation.
Yes! even when my deeds appear as good
so hab ich doch nichts Rechtes ausgericht'.
I still have justified no privilege.
Doch ist der Mensch so ungeduldig,
Yet, the human is so impatient
daß er sich oft betrübt
     that he is often distressed
when dear God does not reward him profusely.
Has he not for ages nourished and clothed us without reason
und will uns einsten seliglich in seine Herrlichkeit erhöh’n?
and will he not one day blessedly elevate us into his splendor?
It is enough for me that I need not go to bed hungry.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Ich esse mit Freuden mein weniges Brot
I eat with joy my meager bread
and do not begrudge in my heart my neighbor's possessions.
Ein ruhig Gewissen, ein fröhlicher Geist,
A quiet conscience, a cheerful spirit,
ein dankbares Herze, das lobet und preist,
a grateful heart that lauds and praises,
vermehret den Segen, versüßet die Not.
     multiplies blessings, sweetens despair.

4. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Im Schweiße meines Angesichts
     With sweat upon my brow
will ich indes mein Brot genießen,
I will nonetheless relish my bread,
und wenn mein Lebenslauf,
     and when my life's course
mein Lebensabend wird beschließen,
     is resolved to life’s twilight
so teilt mir Gott den Groschen aus,
then God allots me a token
da steht der Himmel drauf.
     with Heaven inscribed upon it.
O! wenn ich diese Gabe
zu meinem Gnadenlohne habe,
O! when I have added this gift to my gratuity
so brauch’ ich weiter nichts.
    then I need nothing further.

5. CORALE
Ich leb indes in dir vergnüget
I live meanwhile delighting in you
und sterb ohn alle Kümmernis,
     and die without any worries,
mir genüget, wie es mein Gott füget,
suffice it to me as my God ordains,
ich glaub’ und bin es ganz gewiss:
I believe and am fully certain:
durch deine Gnad’ und Christi Blut
through your grace and Christ's blood
machst du's mit meinem Ende gut.
you will make well my ending.
