Text for Cantata 82
Ich habe genug!
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA BASSO

Ich habe genug!
     I have enough!
lch habe den Heiland,
das Hoffen der Frommen,

auf meine begierigen Arme genommen.
     I have taken the Savior,
     the hope of the devout,
     into my eager arms.
Ich habe genug!
     I have enough!
lch hab ihn erblickt;
     I have gazed upon him;
mein Glaube hat Jesum ans Herze gedrückt;
     my faith has imprinted Jesus on my heart;
nun wünsch ich noch heute mit Freuden
     now, even today, I wish with joy
von hinnen zu scheiden.
     to depart from here.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
lch habe genug.
     I have enough.
Mein Trost ist nur allein,
     My solace is but this alone
das Jesus mein
     that Jesus be mine
und ich sein eigen möchte sein.
     and I might be his own.
Im Glauben halt ich ihn,
     In faith I cling to him
da seh ich auch mit Simeon
     for I too see as Simeon did
die Freude jenes Lebens schon.
     the joy of the other life already.
Laßt uns mit diesem Manne ziehn!
     Let us leave with this man!
Ach! möchte mich von meines Leibes Ketten
der Herr erretten;
     Oh! that the Lord might deliver me
     from my bodily chains;
ach! wäre doch mein Abschied hier,
     oh! were my departure but here,
mit Freude sagt ich, Welt, zu dir:
     with joy would I say to you, world:
Ich habe genug!
     I have enough!

3. ARIA BASSO
Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen,
     Fall aslumber, you dreary eyes,
fallet sanft und selig zu.
     close gently and blissfully.
Welt, ich bleibe nicht mehr hier,
     World, I remain here no more,
hab ich doch kein Teil an dir,
     indeed I find in you no portion
das der Seele könnte taugen.
     which could suit the soul.
Hier muß ich das Elend bauen,
     Here I must sow misery,
aber dort, dort werd ich schauen
     but there, there I will behold
süßen Frieden, stille Ruh.
     sweet peace, quiet rest.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Mein Gott! wann kommt das schöne: Nun!
     My God, when comes that lovely "Now!"
da ich im Frieden fahren werde
     when I will journey into peace
und in dem Sande kühler Erde
     upon the sands of cool ground
und dort bei dir Schoße ruhn.
     and there rest in your lap.
Der Abschied ist gemacht:
     My departure is set:
Welt! gute Nacht.
     World, good night.

5. ARIA BASSO
Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod;
     I look forward to my death;
ach hätt’ sich schon eingefunden.
     oh, would that it had already appeared.
Da entkomm ich aller Not,
     There I shall escape all the hardship
die mich noch auf der Welt gebunden.
     that still binds me to this world.
