Text for Cantata 5
Wo soll ich fliehen hin

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Wo soll ich fliehen hin,
     To where shall I flee
weil ich beschweret bin
     for I am weighted down
mit viel und großen Sünden?
     with many and great a sin?
Wo soll ich Rettung finden?
     Where shall I find redemption?
Wenn alle Welt herkäme,
     Even if the whole world depended on it
mein Angst sie nicht wegnähme.
     it would not remove my anxiety.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
     This heap of sins has not only stained me,
er hat vielmehr den ganzen Geist bedeckt,
     it has actually cloaked my entire spirit,
Gott müßte mich als unrein von sich treiben;
     God should drive me away as unclean;
doch weil ein Tropfen heilges Blut
     yet since just a drop of sacred blood
so große Wunder tut,
     does such great wonders,
kann ich noch unverstoßen bleiben.
     I can still remain, unbanished.
Die Wunden sind ein offnes Meer,
     His wounds are an open sea
dahin ich meine Sünden senke,
     in which I submerge my sins,
     and once I steer myself into this current
     it cleanses me of my stains.

3. ARIA TENORE
Ergieße dich reichlich, du göttliche Quelle,
     Gush forth profusely, you divine spring,
ach, walle mit blutigen Strömen auf mich!
     ah, flow over me with streams of blood!
Es fühlet mein Herze die tröstliche Stunde,
     My heart perceives the hour of comfort,
nun sinken die drückenden Lasten zu Grunde,
     now the oppressive burden soaks into the ground,
es wäschet die sündlichen Flecken von sich.
     the stains of sin are washed away.

4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Mein treuer Heiland tröstet mich,
     My faithful Savior comforts me,
es sei verscharrt in seinem Grabe,
was ich gesündigt habe;

     whatever sins I have committed
     remain buried in his grave;
ist mein Verbrechen noch so groß,
     though my transgression is still so great,
er macht mich frei und los.
     he sets me loose and free.
Wenn Gläubige die Zuflucht bei ihm finden,
     When the faithful find refuge in him
     fear and pain are surely of no more danger
und alsobald verschwinden;
     and immediately disappear;
ihr Seelenschatz, ihr höchstes Gut
     their souls' treasure, their highest good
ist Jesu unschätzbares Blut;
     is Jesus' priceless blood;
     it is their defense from devil, death and sin,
in dem sie überwinden.
     by which they will prevail.

5. ARIA BASSO
Verstumme, Höllenheer,
     Fall silent Hell’s army,
du machst mich nicht verzagt!
     you cause me no despair!
Ich darf dies Blut dir zeigen,
     I just show you this blood
so mußt du plötzlich schweigen,
     and you must instantly be silent,
es ist in Gott gewagt.
     it is vested in God.

6. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
     I am indeed just a tiny part of the world,
und da des Blutes edler Saft
     and yet this blood's noble liquid
unendlich große Kraft bewährt erhält,
     maintains a reliable, unending mighty power,
     for each drop, even though so tiny,
     can cleanse the entire world of sin,
so laß dein Blut ja nicht an mir verderben,
     so let your blood, indeed, not be defiled by me,
es komme mir zugut,
     it is there for my benefit,
daß ich den Himmel kann ererben.
     that I might inherit heaven.

7. CORALE
Führ auch mein Herz und Sinn
     Lead too my heart and mind
durch deinen Geist dahin,
     there, by your Spirit,
daß ich mög alles meiden,
     that I might evade anything
was mich und dich kann scheiden,
     which could seperate me from you,
und ich an deinem Leibe
ein Gliedmaß ewig bleibe.

     and that I eternally remain
     a member of your body.
