Fear
O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort,
O eternity, you thunderous word,
O Schwert, das durch die Seele bohrt,
O sword, which bores through the soul,
O Anfang sonder Ende!
O beginning without end!
O Ewigkeit, Zeit ohne Zeit,
O eternity, time without time,
Ich weiß vor großer Traurigkeit nicht,
I do know not, midst great sorrow,
wo ich mich hinwende;
where I can turn;
mein ganz erschrock'nes Herze bebt,
my completely dismayed heart shutters so
daß mir die Zung am Gaumen klebt.
that my tongue is lodged in my gums.

Herr, ich warte auf dein Heil.

O schwerer Gang zum letzten Kampf und Streite!
O grueling path toward
the final struggle and conflict!

Mein Beistand ist schon da,
My assistance is already here,
mein Heiland sieht mir ja mit Trost zur Seite!
my savior stands, yes, with comfort at my side!
Fear
Die Todesangst, der letzte Schmerz
The fear of death, the final pain
ereilt und überfällt mein Herz
befall and assail my heart
und martert diese Glieder.
and torment these limbs.
Hope
Ich lege diesen Leib vor Gott zum Opfer nieder.
I lay down this body as an offering before God.
Ist gleich der Trübsal Feuer heiß,
If the fire of affliction becomes hot,
genug, es reinigt mich zu Gottes Preis.
fine, it purifies me for the praise of God.
Fear
Doch, nun wird sich der Sünden große Schuld
vor mein Gesichte stellen.
Yet, now the vast guilt of sin
is placed before my face.
Hope
Gott wird deswegen doch kein Todesurteil fällen.
Even so God will indeed not cast
a sentence of death.
Er gibt ein Ende den Versuchungsplagen
He grants an end to the plaging of temptation
daß man sie kann ertragen.

Mein letztes Lager will mich schrecken,
My final resting place terrifies me,

Mich wird des Heilands Hand bedecken,
The savior's hand will blanket me,

des Glaubens Schwachheit sinket fast.
weakness of faith sinks quickly.

mein Jesus trägt mit rnir die Last.
my Jesus bears the burden with me.

Das offne Grab sieht gräulich aus.
The open grave appears gruesome.

Es wird mir doch ein Friedenshaus,
It will actually be my house of peace.

Der Tod bleibt doch der menschlichen Natur erhaßt
Death indeed remains distained of human-nature,
und reißet fast die Hoffnung ganz zu Boden.
and almost rends hope to the ground.

Selig sind die Toten.
Blessed are the dead.
Fear
Ach! Aber ach, wieviel Gefahr stellt sich
der Seele dar, den Sterbeweg zu gehen!
Oh, but oh, how much peril is waged
against the soul to proceed along the path to death!
Vielleicht wird ihr der Höllenrachen, der Tod, erschrecklich machen,
Perhaps the jaws of hell, death, will cause her terror
wenn er sie zu verschlingen sucht;
while seeking to devour her;
vielleicht ist sie bereits verflucht zum ewigen Verderben.
perhaps she is already damned to eternal doom.

Selig sind die Toten,
Blessed are the dead
die in dem Herren sterben.
who die in the Lord.

Wenn ich im Herren sterbe,
If I die in the Lord,
ist dann die Seligkeit mein Theil und Erbe?
is then blessedness my portion and inheritance?
Der Leib wird ja der Würmer Speisel
The body will indeed be sustenance for worms!

Yes, my members will again become dust and dirt
da ich ein Kind des Todes heiße,
for I am called a child of death,
so schein' ich ja im Grabe zu verderben.

von nun an.

Wohlan! Soll ich von nun an selig sein;
So then! Shall I from now on be blessed;
so stelle dich, o Hoffnung, wieder ein!
then present yourself, O Hope, once more!
Mein Leib mag ohne Furcht im Schlafe ruh'n,
My body may, without fear, rest in sleep,
der Geist kann einen Blick in jene Freude tun.
the spirit can cause a glimpse of any joy.

Es ist genug: Herr, wenn es dir gefällt,
It is enough: Lord, if it pleases you,
so spanne mich doch aus!
so I will then take my rest!
Mein Jesus kommt: nun gute Nacht, o Welt!
My Jesus comes: now Goodnight, O world!
Ich fahr' ins Himmelshaus,
I journey to the house of Heaven,
ich fahre sicher hin mit Frieden,
