Text for Cantata 54
Widerstehe doch der Sünde
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA ALTO
Widerstehe doch der Sünde,
     Endure in spite of sin,
sonst ergreifet dich ihr Gift.
     lest its poison seizes you.
Laß dich nicht den Satan blenden;
     Do not let Satan delude you;
denn die Gottes Ehre schänden,
for that which would disgrace God’s honor
trifft ein Fluch, der tödlich ist.
meets a curse which is fatal.

2. RECITATIVO ALTO
Die Art verruchter Sünden ist zwar
This kind of loathsome sin is indeed
von aussen wunderschön,
     beautiful on the outside,
allein man muß hernach mit Kummer
und Verdruss viel Ungemach empfinden.
alone one must suffer hence great hardship
     with misery and affliction.
Von aussen ist sie Gold,
On the outside it is gold,
doch will man weiter geh’n,
     still one will go further,
so zeigt sich nur ein leerer Schatten
then only an empty shadow is revealed
und ubertünchtes Grab.
     and a shrouded grave.
Sie ist den Sodoms Äpfeln gleich,
It is the same as apples of Sodom*,
und die sich mit, derselben gatten,
and those very ones who espouse to these
gelangen nicht in Gottes Reich.
     do not reach God's kingdom.
Sie ist als wie ein scharfes Schwert,
It is just like a sharp sword
das uns durch Leib und Seel' fährt.
driven through us, body and soul.

3.  ARIA ALTO
Wer Sünde tut, der ist vom Teufel,
Whoever commits sin is of the Devil,
denn dieser hat sie aufgebracht,
for this one has procured it (sin),
doch wenn man ihren schnöden Banden
yet when one resists its vile bands,
mit rechter Andacht widerstanden
     enduring in true devotion,
hat sie sich gleich davongemacht.
     it instantly is disbanded.

*Apples of Sodom are a fruit described by ancient writers as externally of fair appearance but dissolving into smoke and ashes when plucked
