Text for Cantata 52
Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht!
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. SINFONIA

2. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht!
False world, I do not trust you!
Hier muß ich unter Skorpionen
und unter falschen Schlangen wohnen.
Here I must live among scorpions
     and deceptive snakes.
Dein Angesicht,
     Your appearance,
das noch so freundlich ist,
     which is ever so friendly,
sinnt auf ein heimliches Verderben:
     plots a secret demise:
wenn Joab küsst,
     by Joab's kiss
so muß ein frommer Abner sterben.
a pious Abner had to die.*
Die Redlichkeit ist aus der Welt verbannt,
Integrity is exiled from the world,
die Falschheit hat sie fortgetrieben,
     falsehood has expelled it,
nun ist die Heuchelei an ihrer Stelle blieben.
now hypocrisy resides in its place.
Der beste Freund ist ungetreu,
     The best friend is unfaithful,
O jämmerlicher Stand!
     O wretched state!

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Immerhin, immerhin,
     So what, so what,
wenn ich gleich verstoßen bin!
even if I am suddenly cast out!
Ist die falsche Welt mein Feind,
Though the false world is my foe,
o so bleibt doch Gott mein Freund,
O, so God remains yet my friend,
der es redlich mit mir meint.
     he deems honesty with me.

4. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Gott ist getreu!
     God is faithful!
Er wird, er kann mich nicht verlassen;
     He will not and cannot forsake me;
will mich die Welt und ihre Raserei
should the world and its fury wish
in ihre Schlingen fassen,
to snare me in its noose,
so steht mir seine Hilfe bei.
then his help stays beside me.
Auf seine Freundschaft will ich bauen,
Upon his friendship do I build,
und meine Seele, Geist und Sinn
and my soul, spirit and mind
und alles, was ich bin,
     and everything that I am
ihm anvertrauen.
     I entrust to him.

5. ARIA SOPRANO
Ich halt es mit dem lieben Gott,
I stay beside this dear God,
die Welt mag nur alleine bleiben.
let the world remain on its own.
Gott mit mir, und ich mit Gott,
With God beside me, and me beside God,
also kann ich selber Spott
mit den falschen Zungen treiben.
     thus I myself can dispel
     the mockery of deceptive tongues.

6. CORALE
In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr,
In you I have hoped, Lord,
hilf, daß ich nicht zuschanden werd,
help that I neither come to ruin
noch ewiglich zu Spotte!
     nor eternally be derided!
Das bitt ich dich,
     This I pray you,
erhalte mich
     preserve me
in deiner Treu, Herr Gotte!
     in your truth, Lord God!

*Joab was the nephew of King David and captain of his army. His brother Asahel was
killed by Abner in combat, for which Joab took revenge by murdering Abner against David's wishes.
