Text for Cantata 49
Ich geh’ und suche mit Verlangen dich
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Bass - Jesus
Soprano - Soul

1.   SINFONIA

2.   ARIA BASSO
Ich geh’ und suche mit Verlangen dich,
I go and seek you with longing,
     meine Taube, schönste Braut!
         my dove, fairest bride!
Sag’ an, wo bist du hingegangen,
Do tell, where you have gone
daß dich mein Auge nicht mehr schaut?
for my eyes no longer discern you?

3.  RECITATIVO  BASSO E SOPRANO
B:
  Mein Mahl ist zubereit’t
          My feast is prepared
      und meine Hochzeittafel fertig,
          and my wedding table set,
nur meine Braut ist noch nicht gegenwärtig.
only my bride is not yet present.
S:   Mein Jesus red’t von mir,
          My Jesus speaks of me,
      o Stimme, welche mich erfreut!
          O voice which delights me!
I go and seek you with longing,
      meine Taube, schönste Braut!
          my dove, fairest bride!
S:   Mein Brautigam! Ich falle dir zu Füβen.
My bridegroom! I fall at your feet.
B/S: Komm, Schönste (Schönster), komm
           Come, fairest, come,
      und laß dich küssen,
           and let me kiss you,
du sollst mein (laß mich dein) fettes Mahl genießen
you shall (let me) savor my (your) rich feast.
Come dear bride and (My bridegroom I) hasten now,
      die Hochzeitkleider anzutun.
           to don the wedding gown.

4.  ARIA SOPRANO
Ich bin herrlich, ich bin schön,
I am splendid, I am lovely,
     meinen Heiland zu entzünden.
          arousing my savior.
     Seines Heils Gerechtigkeit
          The righteousness of his salvation
     ist mein Schmuck und Ehrenkleid,
is my jewelry and noble gown,
     und damit will ich besteh’n,
and with these I will exist
wenn ich werd in Himmel geh’n.
          until I enter Heaven.

5.  RECITATIVO SOPRANO E  BASSO
S:
Mein Glaube hat mich selbst so angezogen!
My faith itself has thus clothed me!
B:  So bleibt mein Herze dir gewogen,
So my heart remains inclined to you
         so in eternity, with you,
I will be intimate and bethrothed.
S:  Wie wohl ist mir!
         How well for me!
     Der Himmel ist mir aufgehoben:
         Heaven is opened before me:
Die Majestät ruft selbst und sendet ihre Knechte,
His majesty himself summons and sends his servants
daß das gefallene Geschlechte im Himmelssaal,
bei dem Erlösungsmahl zu Gaste möge sein,
that the fallen race might be guests
at the feast of redemption in Heaven's hall,
hier komm ich, Jesu, laß mich ein!
here I come, Jesus, let me enter!
B: Sei bis in Tod getreu,
         Be true unto death,
so leg ich dir die Lebenskrone bei.
thus I lay the crown of life before you.

6.  DUETTO BASSO E SOPRANO
B:
Dich hab’ ich je und je geliebet,
On and on I have loved you,
S:  Wie bin ich doch so herzlich froh,
How sincerely glad I am indeed
that my treasure is the alpha and omega,
     der Anfang und das Ende.
          the beginning and the end.
and thus I draw you unto me.
     aufnehmen in das Paradeis;
          He will indeed admit me
          into paradise as his prize;
des klopf’ ich in die Hände.
to this I clap my hands.
B:  Ich komme bald,
          I am coming soon,
S:  Amen. Amen.
          Amen. Amen.
B:  Ich stehe vor der Tür.
          I stand before the door.
S:  Komm, du schöne Freudenkrone, bleib’ nicht lange!
Come you lovely crown of joy, tarry not!
B:  Mach’ auf, mein Aufenthalt!
           Open up my residence!
S:  Deiner wart’ ich mit Verlangen.
           I await you with longing.
On and on I have loved you,
und darum zieh’ ich dich zu mir.
and thus I draw you unto me.
