Text for Cantata 42
Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. SINFONIA

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats,
     In the evening, however,
     of that very same Sabbath,
da die Jünger versammlet
     while the disciples were gathered
und die Türen verschlossen waren
     and the doors were locked
aus Furcht für den Jüden,
out of fear of the Jews,
kam Jesus und trat mitten ein.
Jesus came and stepped into their midst.

3. ARIA ALTO
Wo zwei und drei versammlet sind
Where two or three are gathered
in Jesu teurem Namen,
     in Jesus precious name,
da stellt sich Jesus mitten ein
there Jesus appears in their midst
und spricht darzu das Amen.
and speaks to them the benediction.
Denn was aus Lieb und Not geschicht,
For whatever is derived of love and need
das bricht des Höchsten Ordnung nicht.
     the highest order cannot breech.

4. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO E TENORE
Verzage nicht, o Häuflein klein,
Do not despair, O little band,
obschon die Feinde willens sein,
although it be the enemies will
dich gänzlich zu verstören,
     to completely confound you,
und suchen deinen Untergang,
     and seek out your demise,
davon dir wird recht angst und bang:
by this you rightly fear and dread:
es wird nicht lange währen.
it will not last for long.

5. RECITATIVO BASSO
Man kann hiervon ein schön Exempel sehen
Hereof, one can see a fine example
an dem, was zu Jerusalem geschehen;
     from that which occurred at Jerusalem;
denn da die Jünger sich versammlet hatten
for when the disciples had gathered together
im finstern Schatten,
     under darkened shadow,
aus Furcht für denen Jüden,
out of fear of the Jews,
so trat mein Heiland mitten ein,
so my savior stepped into their midst,
zum Zeugnis, daß er seiner Kirche Schutz will sein.
as proof that he will be his church's protector.
Drum lasst die Feinde wüten!
     Therefore let the enemy rage!

6. ARIA BASSO
Jesus ist ein Schild der Seinen,
Jesus is an emblem for his own,
wenn sie die Verfolgung trifft.
     whenever they meet persecution.
Ihnen muß die Sonne scheinen
On them the sun must shine
mit der güldnen Überschrift:
     with this golden inscription:
Jesus ist ein Schild der Seinen,
Jesus is an emblem for his own,
wenn sie die Verfolgung trifft.
     whenever they meet persecution.

7. CORALE
Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,
     Lend us peace, graciously,
Herr Gott, zu unsern Zeiten;
     Lord God, within our time;
es ist doch ja kein andrer nicht,
there is, yes indeed, no one else
der für uns könnte streiten,
     who could fight for us
denn du, unsr Gott, alleine.
other than you, our God, alone.

Gib unsern Fürsten und all'r Obrigkeit
Grant our princes and all authorities
Fried und gut Regiment,
     peace and good rule,
daß wir unter ihnen
     that we below them
ein geruhig und stilles Leben führen mögen
may lead a quiet and tranquil life
in aller Gottseligkeit und Ehrbarkeit.
midst all God’s blessings and honor.
Amen.
