Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir

1. CORO
Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir,
     Out of deep agony I cry to you,
Herr Gott, erhör mein Rufen;
     Lord God answer my call;
dein gnädig Ohr' neig her zu mir
     lean your merciful ears near to me
und meiner Bitt sie öffne!
     and open them to my plea!
Denn so du willt das sehen an,
     For as you will consider this,
was Sünd und Unrecht ist getan,
     what sin and injustice have been done,
wer kann, Herr, vor dir bleiben?
     who Lord, can stand before you?
 
2. RECITATIVO ALTO
In Jesu Gnade wird allein
der Trost vor uns und die Vergebung sein,
     By Jesus' grace alone will there be
     comfort before us, and forgiveness,
weil durch des Satans Trug und List
     for due to Satan's deceit and cunning
der Menschen ganzes Leben
     the entire life of humanity
vor Gott ein Sündengreuel ist.
     is a sinful abomination before God.
Was könnte nun die Geistesfreudigkeit
zu unserm Beten geben,
     What now could the spirit's joy lend to our plea
wo Jesu Geist und Wort nicht neue Wunder tun?
     were Jesus' spirit and word not doing new wonders?
 
3. ARIA TENORE
Ich höre mitten in den Leiden
     I hear in the midst of suffering
ein Trostwort, so mein Jesus spricht.
     a word of comfort as my Jesus speaks.
Drum, o geängstigtes Gemüte
     Thus, O anxious soul,
vertraue deines Gottes Güte,
     trust in your God's goodness,
sein Wort besteht und fehlet nicht,
     his word persists and does not fail,
sein Trost wird niemals von dir scheiden!
     his comfort will never be severed from you!
 
4. RECITATIVO A BATTUTA SOPRANO
Ach! daß mein Glaube noch so schwach,
     Alas! that my faith [is] still so feeble,
und daß ich mein Vertrauen
auf feuchtem Grunde muß erbauen!
     and that I must rebuild my trust
     on soggy ground!
Wie ofte müssen neue Zeichen
     How often fresh signs must
mein Herz erweichen!
     soften my heart!
Wie kennst du deinen Helfer nicht,
     How do you not recognize your helper
der nur ein einzig Trostwort spricht,
     who merely speaks a single word of comfort
und gleich erscheint, eh deine Schwachheit
es vermeint, die Rettungsstunde.
     and instantly, before your frailty is even considered, 
     the hour of redemption appears.
Vertraue nur der Allmachtshand
und seiner Wahrheit Munde!
     Simply trust in the hand of the almighty
     and in his mouth of truth!
 
5. TERZETTO SOPRANO ALTO E BASSO
Wenn meine Trübsal als mit Ketten
ein Unglück an dem andern hält,
     When my afflictions, as if by chains,
     bind one misfortune to another
so wird mich doch mein Heil erretten,
     so will my savior yet deliver me
daß alles plötzlich von mir fällt.
     that all (chains) suddenly drop from me.
Wie bald erscheint des Trostes Morgen
     How quickly the morning of consolation dawns
auf diese Nacht der Not und Sorgen!
     upon this night of agony and distress!
 
6. CORALE
Ob bei uns ist der Sünden viel,
     Though sin is great within us
bei Gott ist viel mehr Gnade;
     with God there is much more grace;
sein Hand zu helfen hat kein Ziel,
     his hand for helping has no conclusion,
wie groß auch sei der Schade.
     no matter how great the damage.
Er ist allein der gute Hirt,
     He alone is the good shepherd
der Israel erlösen wird
     who will redeem Israel
aus seinen Sünden allen.
     from all its sins.
