Text for Cantata 36
Schwingt freudig euch em
por, I
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

ERSTER TEIL (PART I)

1. CORO
Schwingt freudig euch empor zu den erhab’nen Sternen,
Resound joyously on high, up to the lofty stars,
ihr Zungen, die ihr jetzt in Zion fröhlich seid.
you tongues, which are now glad in Zion.
Doch, haltet ein! der Schall darf sich nicht weit entfernen,
Yet, wait! the sound need not travel far,
es naht sich selbst zu euch der Herr der Herrlichkeit.
for drawing near to you is the Lord of glory himself.

 2. CORALE (DUETTO) SOPRANO E ALTO
Nun komm, der heiden Heiland,
Come now, savior of the gentiles,
der Jungfrauen Kind erkannt,
     the virgin’s child made known,
dess sich wundert alle Welt:
at which the whole world wonders:
Gott solch’Geburt ihm bestellt.
that God would pose such a birth.

3. ARIA TENORE
Die Liebe führt mit sanften Schritten
sein Treugeliebtes allgemach

Love tenuously approaches its truly beloved
     with tender footsteps.
Gleich wie es seine Braut entzücket,
Just as a bride is enraptured
wenn sie den Bräutigam erblicket,
when she glimpses of the groom
so folgt ein Herz auch Jesu nach.
so too the heart pursues Jesus.

4. CORALE
Zwingt die Saiten in Cythara
Engage the strings of the zither
und laßt die süße Musica
     and let the sweet music
ganz freudenreich erschallen,
ring out with full joy's richness,
daß ich möge mit Jesulein,
that I might, with baby Jesus,
dem wunderschönen Bräutgam mein,
in steter Liebe wallen!
     this beautiful bridegroom of mine,
     simmer in constant love!
Singet, Springet, Jubilieret,
     Sing, spring, jubilate,
triumphieret, dankt dem Herren!
     triumph, thank the Lord!
Groß ist der König der Ehren.
Great is the king of glory.

ZWEITER TEIL (PART II)

5. ARIA BASSO
Willkommen, werter Schatz!
     Welcome, costly treasure!
Die Lieb und Glaube machet Platz
vor dich in meinem Herzen rein,
Love and faith make room for you
     in my heart, pure,
zieh bei mir ein!
     settle within me!

6. CORALE TENORE
Der du bist dem Vater gleich,
You who are one with the Father,
führ hinaus den Sieg im Fleisch,
drive away the conquest of the flesh,
daß dein ewig Gott'sgewalt
     that your eternal godly power
in uns das krank Fleisch enthalt.
subvert in us the ailing flesh.

 7. ARIA SOPRANO
Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen
     Even with muffled, meager voices
wird Gottes Majestät verehrt.
     God's majesty will be revered.
Denn schallet nur der Geist dabei,
For if the spirit merely resonates within
so ist ihm solches ein Geschrei,
so it is like a shout to him,
das er im Himmel selber hört.
which he himself hears in Heaven.

8. CORALE
Lob sei Gott, dem Vater, g'ton,
     Praise be to God, intoned,
lob sei Gott, sein'm eingen Sohn,
praise be to God, his only son,
lob sei Gott, dem Heilgen Geist,
praise be to God, the Holy Ghost,
immer und in Ewigkeit!
     always and in eternity!
