Text for Cantata 31
Der Himmel lacht, die Erde jubilieret
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1.   SONATA

2.   CORO
Der Himmel lacht, die Erde jubilieret
The heavens laugh, the earth rejoices
und was sie trägt in ihrem Schoß;
     and that which she bears in her womb;
Der Schöpfer lebt! Der Höchste triumphieret,
The creator lives! The Most-High triumphs,
und ist von Todesbanden los.
and is free from the bonds of death.
Der sich das Grab zur Ruh erlesen,
He who chose himself the grave for rest,
der Heiligste kann night verwesen.
     the holiest cannot decay.

3.   RECITATIVO BASSO
Erwünscher Tag! Sei, Seele, wieder froh!
Desired day! Be glad, soul, once more!
Das A und O,
     The Alpha and Omega
der Erst’ und auch der Letzte,
the beginning and also the end,
den unsre schwere Schuld in Todeskerker setzte,
whom our severe guilt committed to death’s prison,
ist nun gerissen aus der Not!
is now wrenched free from adversity!
Der Herr war tot,
     The Lord was dead,
und sieh, er lebet wieder;
     and behold, he lives again;
lebt unser Haupt, so leben auch die Glieder.
as our head lives, so too live the members.
Der Herr hat in der Hand
     The Lord has in hand
des Todes und der Hölle Schlüssel!
the keys to death and hell!
Der sein Gewand blutrot bespritzt in seinem bittern Leiden,
He, his robe splattered red with blood in his bitter passion,
will heute sich mit Schmuck und Ehren kleiden.
will today be attired in jewels and honor.

4.   ARIA BASSO
Fürst des Lebens, starker Streiter,
     Prince of life, mighty warrior,
hochgelobter Gottessohn,
     highly praised Son of God,
hebet dich des Kreuzes Leiter
does the ladder of the cross hoist you
auf den höchsten Ehrenthron?
up to the highest throne of honor?
Wird, was dich zuvor gebunden,
Does that which once bound you, become
nun dein Schmuck und Edelstein?
     now your jewelry and gemstones?
Müßen deine Pupurwunden
     Shall your purple wounds
deiner Klarheit Strahlen sein?
     be your lucid rays?

5.   RECITATIVO TENORE
So stehe denn, du Gottergebne Seele,
mit Christo geistlich auf!
So arise then, you God-devoted soul,
     divinely with Christ.
Tritt an den neuen Lebenslauf!
Step upon a new life's course!
Auf! Von des Todes Werken!
Arise! from the acts of death!
Laß, daß dein Heiland in dir lebt,
Allow for your Savior to live in you
an deinem Leben merken!
     realized in your life!
Der Weinstock, der jetzt blüht,
     The grapevine which now blooms
trägt keine toten Reben!
     bears no foul grapes!
Der Lebensbaum läßt seine Zweige leben!
The tree of life has living branches!
Ein Christe flieht ganz eiland von dem Grabe!
A Christian flees the grave in full haste!
Er läßt den Stein,
     He leaves the stone,
er läßt das Tuch der Sünden dahinen
he leaves the shroud of sin behind
und will mit Christo lebend sein.
and will be alive with Christ.

6.   ARIA TENORE
Adam muß in uns verwesen,
The Adam in us must now decay
soll der neue Mensch genesen,
that the new man be restored,
der nach Gott geschaffen ist.
who is created in the image of God.
Du mußt geistlich auferstehen
     You must be spiritually resurrected
und aus Sündengräbern gehen,
and go out of the graves of sin
wenn du Christi Gliedmaß bist.
if you are a member in Christ.

7.   RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Weil denn das Haupt sein Glied natürlich nach sich zieht,
Just as the head is naturally connected to its members,
so kann mich nichts von Jesu scheiden.
so can nothing separate me from Jesus.
Muß ich mit Christo leiden,
If I must suffer with Christ,
so werd’ ich auch nach dieser Zeit
so shall I too following that time
mit Christo wieder auferstehen
     with Christ arise once more
zur Ehr und Herrlichkeit
     in honor and glory
und Gott in meinem Fleische sehen.
and behold God in my own flesh.

8.   ARIA SOPRANO
Lezte Stunde, brich herein,
     Final hour, burst forth,
mir die Augen zu zudrücken!
     pressing closed my eyes!
Laß mich Jesu Freudenschein
und sein helles Licht erblicken.
Let me gaze on Jesus’ joyous rays
     and his bright light.
Laß mich Engeln ähnlich sein!
     Liken me unto angels!
Letzte Stunde, brich herein!
     Final hour, burst forth!

9.   CORALE
So fahr ich hin zu Jesu Christ,
Thus I journey forth to Jesus Christ,
mein’ Arm’ tu ich ausstrecken;
     my arms outstretched before me;
so schlaf’ ich ein und ruhe fein,
thus I fall asleep and sweetly rest,
kein Mensch kann mich aufwecken,
     no human can awaken me,
denn Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
     for Jesus Christ, God's son,
der wird die Himmelstür auftun,
     he will open Heaven’s door
mich führ’n zum ew‘gen Leben.
     guiding me into eternal life.
