ERSTER TEIL  (PART 1) 
 
1. CORO
Freue dich, erlöste Schar,
     Rejoice, redeemed throng,
freue dich in Sions Hütten!
     rejoice in the shelters of Zion!
Dein Gedeihen hat itzund
     Your prosperity has now
einen rechten festen Grund,
     a truly firm foundation
dich mit Wohl zu überschütten.
     to shower wellbeing upon you.
 
2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Wir haben Rast, und des Gesetzes Last ist abgetan.
     We have rest, and the burden of the law is lifted.
Nichts soll uns diese Ruhe stören,
     Nothing shall disrupt this peace for us,    
die unsre lieben Väter oft gewünscht, verlanget und gehofft.
     for which our dear forefathers often wished, longed and hoped.
Wohlan, es freue sich, wer immer kann,
     Henceforth, let him rejoice, who always can,
und stimme seinem Gott zu Ehren ein Loblied an,
     and intone to the glory of his God a song of praise,
und das im höhern Chor, ja, singt einander vor!
     and this indeed be sung in the high choir before one another!
 
3. ARIA BASSO
Gelobet sei Gott, gelobet sein Name,
     Praise be to God, praise his name,
der treulich gehalten Versprechen und Eid!
     who faithfully kept his promises and oath!
Sein treuer Diener ist geboren,
     His faithful servant is born,
der längstens darzu auserkoren,
     chosen long ago for this very purpose,
daß er den Weg dem Herrn bereit'.
     that he might prepare the way to the Lord!
 
4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Der Herold kömmt und meldt den König an,
     The herald comes and announces the king,
er ruft; drum säumet nicht
     he beckons; thus do not tarry
und macht euch auf
     and make off
mit einem schnellen Lauf,
     at a quick pace,
eilt dieser Stimme nach!
     hasten toward this voice!
Sie zeigt den Weg, sie zeigt das Licht,
     It reveals the way, it reveals the light,
wodurch wir jene selge Auen
dereinst gewißlich können schauen.
     by which we will surely behold
     such blessed meadows one day.

5. ARIA ALTO
Kommt, ihr angefochtnen Sünder,
     Come, you contested sinners,
eilt und lauft, ihr Adamskinder,
     hasten and run, you children of Adam,
euer Heiland ruft und schreit!
     your savior beacons and calls!
Kommet, ihr verirrten Schafe,
     Come, you wayward sheep,
stehet auf vom Sündenschlafe,
     arise from sin’s slumber,
denn itzt ist die Gnadenzeit!
     for now is the time of mercy!
 
6. CORALE
Eine Stimme läßt sich hören
     One voice is to be heard
in der Wüsten weit und breit,
     in the desert far and wide,
alle Menschen zu bekehren:
     to convert all people:
macht dem Herrn den Weg bereit,
     make ready the way of the Lord,
machet Gott ein ebne Bahn,
     make God a smooth path,
alle Welt soll heben an,
     the entire world shall begin
alle Täler zu erhöhen,
     to exalt every valley,
daß die Berge niedrig stehen.
     that the mountains be made low.
 
 
ZWEITER TEIL  (PART 2) 
 
7. RECITATIVO BASSO
So bist du denn, mein Heil, bedacht,
     So you, my Savior, are the one intended
den Bund, den du gemacht
mit unsern Vätern, treu zu halten
     to hold true the covenant that
     you made with our forefathers,
und in Genaden über uns zu walten;
     and to preside over us in mercy;
drum will ich mich mit allem Fleiß
dahin bestreben,
     thus will I strive toward this with all diligence
dir, treuer Gott, auf dein Geheiß
     to you, faithful God, at your bidding
in Heiligkeit und Gottesfurcht zu leben.
     to live in holiness and fear of God.
 
8. ARIA BASSO
Ich will nun hassen
     I now will loathe
und alles lassen,
     and abandon everything
was dir, mein Gott, zuwider ist.
     that is contrary to you, my God.
Ich will dich nicht betrüben,
     I will not grieve you
hingegen herzlich lieben,
     but rather dearly love [you],
weil du mir so genädig bist.
     for you are so merciful to me.
 
9. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Und obwohl sonst der Unbestand
den schwachen Menschen ist verwandt,
     And although inconsistency is otherwise 
     akin to weak humanity,
so sei hiermit doch zugesagt:
     so be it hereby decreed:
sooft die Morgenröte tagt,
     as often as the dawn breaks
solang ein Tag den andern folgen läßt,
     as long as one day 
     follows another,
so lange will ich steif und fest,
mein Gott, durch deinen Geist
dir ganz und gar zu Ehren leben.
     so long will I live, firm and fast,
     to glorify you my God,
     utterly and completely, by your Spirit.
Dich soll sowohl mein Herz als Mund
nach dem mit dir gemachten Bund,
mit wohlverdientem Lob erheben.
     My heart as well as my mouth,
     shall extol you with well-earned praise,
     according to the covenant you made with me.
     
10. ARIA SOPRANO
Eilt, ihr Stunden, kommt herbei,
     Hasten, you hours, come round,
bringt mich bald in jene Auen!
     bring me quickly to such meadows!
Ich will mit der heilgen Schar
meinem Gott ein' Dankaltar
in den Hütten Kedar bauen,
     I, with the saintly throng,
     want to build my God an altar of thanks
     among the tents of Kedar*,
bis ich ewig dankbar sei.
     that I be ever grateful.
 
11. RECITATIVO TENORE
Geduld, der angenehme Tag
     Patience! the pleasant day
kann nicht mehr weit und lange sein,
     cannot be far and long off anymore,
da du von aller Plag
der Unvollkommenheit der Erden,
die dich, mein Herz, gefangen hält,
vollkommen wirst befreiet werden.
     where you will be completely liberated
     from all the plaguing of the earth’s imperfections
     which hold you, my heart, captive.
Der Wunsch trifft endlich ein,
     The wish finally appears,
da du mit den erlösten Seelen in der Vollkommenheit 
      where you, with the redeemed soul in perfection
von diesem Tod des Leibes bist befreit,
     are liberated from this bodily death,
da wird dich keine Not mehr quälen.
     where no more affliction will torment you.
 
12. CORO
Freude dich, geheil'gte Schar,
     Rejoice, hallowed throng,
freue dich in Sions Auen!
     rejoice in Zion’s pastures!
Deiner Freude Herrlichkeit,
     Your joy's splendor,
deiner Selbstzufriedenheit
     your self-contentment
wird die Zeit kein Ende schauen.
     will regard time without end.

*Nomadic tribe of northern Arabia. Named for the second son of Ishmael.
