Text for BWV 29
Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. SINFONIA

2. CORO
Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir
We thank you, God, we thank you
und verkündigen deine Wunder.
     and proclaim your wonders.

3. ARIA TENORE
Halleluja, Stärk und Macht
     Hallelujah, power and might
sei des Allerhöchsten Namen!
be of the Most High's name!
Zion ist noch seine Stadt,
     Zion is yet his city
da er seine Wohnung hat,
     where he has his abode,
da er noch bei unserm Samen
where among our seed he still
an der Väter Bund gedacht.
     recalls the fatherly covenant.

4. RECITATIVO BASSO
Gottlob! es geht uns wohl!
Praise God! it is well with us!
Gott ist noch unsre Zuversicht,
     God is still our assurance,
sein Schutz, sein Trost und Licht
his protection, his comfort and light
beschirmt die Stadt und die Paläste,
     shield the city and palaces,
sein Flügel hält die Mauern feste.
his pinion holds the walls fast.
Er lässt uns allerorten segnen,
     He grants us blessing everywhere,
der Treue, die den Frieden küsst,
     loyalty, which caresses peace,
muß für und für Gerechtigkeit begegnen.
must forever and ever confront righteousness.
Wo ist ein solches Volk wie wir,
Where is there such a people as we,
dem Gott so nah und gnädig ist!
to whom God is so near and merciful?

5. ARIA SOPRANO
Gedenk an uns mit deiner Liebe,
     Remember us by your love,
schleuß uns in dein Erbarmen ein!
     channel us into your mercy!
Segne die, so uns regieren,
     Bless those, who govern us,
die uns leiten, schützen, führen,
those who lead, protect and guide us,
segne die gehorsam sein!
     bless those who are obedient!

6. RECITATIVO ALTO E CORO
Vergiß es ferner nicht, mit deiner Hand
uns Gutes zu erweisen;
     Furthermore, do not forget
     to bestow goodness upon us, by your hand;
so soll dich unsre Stadt und unser Land,
so shall our city and our land,
das deiner Ehre voll,
     filled with your glory,
mit Opfern und mit Danken preisen,
praise you with offerings and with thanks,
und alles Volk soll sagen:
     and all people shall say:
Amen!
     Amen!

7. ARIA ALTO
Halleluja, Stärk und Macht
     Hallelujah, power and might
sei des Allerhöchsten Namen!
be of the Most High's name!

8. CORALE
Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren
Laud and praise with honor be
Gott Vater, Sohn, heiligem Geist!
to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
Der woll’ in uns vermehren,
     Who will multiply in us
was er uns aus Gnaden verheißt,
what he promises us out of grace,
daß wir ihm fest vertrauen,
that we might firmly trust him
gänzlich verlass’n auf ihn,
     completely abandon ourselves to him,
von Herzen auf ihn bauen,
     earnestly build upon him,
daß unser Herz, Mut und Sinn
that our heart, courage and mind
ihm tröstlich soll'n anhangen;
     securely espouse to him;
drauf singen wir zur Stund:
to this we sing this hour:
Amen! wir werden's erlangen,
     Amen! we will achieve this,
glaub’n wir aus Herzens Grund.
we believe deep within our hearts.
