Text for Cantata 7
Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam
     Christ our Lord came to the Jordan
nach seines Vaters Willen,
     following his father’s will,
von Sankt Johanns die Taufe nahm,
     he received baptism from St. John,
sein Werk und Amt zu erfüllen;
     to initiate his work and office;
da wollt er stiften uns ein Bad,
     he desired here to establish a font for us
zu waschen uns von Sünden,
     to wash us of our sins,
ersäufen auch den bittern Tod
     drowning bitter death as well
durch sein selbst Blut und Wunden;
     through his own blood and wounds;
es galt ein neues Leben.
     this constituted a new life.

2. ARIA BASSO
Merkt und hört, ihr Menschenkinder,
     Take note and hear,
     you children of humanity,
was Gott selbst die Taufe heißt.
     how God himself defines baptism.
Es muß zwar hier Wasser sein,
     There must of course be water present,
doch schlecht Wasser nicht allein.
     but not mere water alone.
Gottes Wort und Gottes Geist
     God’s word and God’s spirit
tauft und reiniget die Sünder.
     immerse and purify the sinner.

3. RECITATIVO TENORE
Dies hat Gott klar mit Worten
und mit Bildern dargetan,

     God clearly demonstrated this
     with words and imagery,
am Jordan ließ der Vater offenbar
die Stimme bei der Taufe Christi hören;

     at the Jordan, as Jesus was baptized,
     the Father openly let his voice be heard
er sprach: Dies ist mein lieber Sohn,
     he spoke: This is my beloved son,
an diesem hab ich Wohlgefallen,
     in whom I am well-pleased,
er ist vom hohen Himmelsthron
der Welt zugut
in niedriger Gestalt gekommen
     he is come from heaven's high throne
     in humble form,
     for the good of the world
und hat das Fleisch und Blut
der Menschenkinder angenommen;
     and has taken upon himself
     the flesh and blood
     of the children of humanity;
den nehmet nun als euren Heiland an
     receive him now as your Savior
und höret seine teuren Lehren!
     and hear his valuable instruction!

4. ARIA TENORE
Des Vaters Stimme ließ sich hören,
     The Father’s voice let itself be heard,
der Sohn, der uns mit Blut erkauft,
     the Son, who purchased us with his blood,
ward als ein wahrer Mensch getauft.
     was baptized as a true human being.
Der Geist erschien im Bild der Tauben,
     The Spirit appeared in the image of a dove
damit wir ohne Zweifel glauben,
     so that we might believe
     beyond any doubt
es habe die Dreifaltigkeit
uns selbst die Taufe zubereit'.
      that the Trinity itself
      has ordained baptism for us.

5. RECITATIVO BASSO
Als Jesus dort nach seinen Leiden
und nach dem Auferstehn
aus dieser Welt zum Vater wollte gehn,
     There, following his passion and resurrection,
     when Jesus wanted to proceed from this world
     to the Father
sprach er zu seinen Jüngern:
     he spoke to his disciples:
geht hin in alle Welt und lehret alle Heiden,
     Go forth into all the world
     and instruct all gentiles,
wer glaubet und getaufet wird auf Erden,
     that whoever on earth believes and is baptized
der soll gerecht und selig werden.
      shall be made righteous and blessed.

6. ARIA ALTO
Menschen, glaubt doch dieser Gnade,
     Humanity, do believe in this grace,
daß ihr nicht in Sünden sterbt,
     that you not die in sin
noch im Höllenpfuhl verderbt!
     nor decay in the mire of Hell!
Menschenwerk und –heiligkeit
     Human deeds and saintliness
gilt vor Gott zu keiner Zeit.
     validate nothing for God.
Sünden sind uns angeboren,
     We are born in sin,
wir sind von Natur verloren;
     we are lost by nature;
Glaub und Taufe macht sie rein,
     faith and baptism make these clean,
daß sie nicht verdammlich sein.
     that they not lead to damnation.

7. CORALE
Das Aug allein das Wasser sieht,
     The eye percieves only the water
wie Menschen Wasser gießen,
     for humans pour water,
der Glaub allein die Kraft versteht
     but faith alone comprehends the power
des Blutes Jesu Christi,
     of the blood of Jesus Christ,
und ist für ihm ein rote Flut
     and [this] is to it a red flood,
von Christi Blut gefärbet,
     the color of Christ’s blood,
die allen Schaden heilet gut
     which well heals all wounds
von Adam her geerbet,
     inherited from Adam,
auch von uns selbst begangen.
     as well as those caused by us.
