Text for Cantata 3
Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid, I

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. CORO
Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid
     Oh God, so many heartaches
begegnet mir zu dieser Zeit!
     confront me in this time!
Der schmale Weg ist trübsalvoll,
den ich zum Himmel wandern soll.
The narrow path upon which I shall
wander to heaven is full of tribulation.

2. RECITATIVO (E CORALE) T A S B
(Chorale is shown in bold print)
Wie schwerlich lässt sich Fleisch und Blut
How difficult it is for flesh and blood

which strive merely so for earthly and idle things
and regard neither God nor heaven,
zwingen zu dem ewigen Gut!
to be compelled toward the eternal good!

A: Da du, o Jesu, nun mein alles bist,
For you, O Jesus, are now my everything,
und doch mein Fleisch so widerspenstig ist.
and yet my flesh is so resistant.
Wo soll ich mich denn wenden hin?
     Where then shall I turn?

S: Das Fleisch ist schwach, doch will der Geist;
     The flesh is weak, but the spirit willing;
so hilf du mir, der du mein Herze weißt.
so help me, as you know my heart.
Zu dir, o Jesu, steht mein Sinn.
Unto you, O Jesus, is my intent.

B: Wer deinem Rat und deiner Hilfe traut,
Whoever trusts in your guidance and your aid,
has indeed never built on faulty ground,
for you came as comfort to the entire world,
und unser Fleisch an dich genommen,
and took our flesh upon yourself,
so rettet uns dein Sterben
     thus your dying saves us
vom endlichen Verderben.
     from the ultimate damnation.
Drum schmecke doch ein gläubiges Gemüte
Therefore a believing soul will taste indeed
des Heilands Freundlichkeit und Güte.
the kindness and goodness of the Savior.

3. ARIA BASSO
Empfind ich Höllenangst und Pein,
I experience Hell's fear and pain,
doch muß beständig in dem Herzen
ein rechter Freudenhimmel sein.

yet a true heaven of joy certainly
     resides continually in the heart.
Ich darf nur Jesu Namen nennen,
I need simply mention Jesus’ name
der kann auch unermessne Schmerzen
als einen leichten Nebel trennen.

who can disperse even immeasurable pain
as if it were a faint mist.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Es mag mir Leib und Geist verschmachten,
Should my body and soul languish,
you are mine, O Jesus, and I am yours,
will ichs nicht achten.
     I will notice nothing.
Dein treuer Mund
      Your mouth of truth
und dein unendlich Lieben,
     and your unending loving,
das unverändert stets geblieben,
     which, unchanged, remain constant,
erhält mir noch den ersten Bund,
still preserve in me the original covenant,
der meine Brust mit Freudigkeit erfüllet
which fills my breast with joy
and also stills the fear of death and horror of the grave.
Should despair and deprivation close in on all sides,
my Jesus will be my treasure and riches.

5. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO ALTO
Wenn Sorgen auf mich dringen,
     When worries press upon me,
will ich in Freudigkeit
zu meinem Jesu singen.
I will sing with joy to my Jesus.
Mein Kreuz hilft Jesus tragen,
     Jesus helps bear my cross,
drum will ich gläubig sagen:
     thus will I faithfully say:
Es dient zum Besten allezeit.
It serves for the best, always.

6. CORALE
Erhalt mein Herz im Glauben rein,
Receive my heart in pure faith,
so leb und sterb ich dir allein.
so I live and die in you alone.
Jesu, mein Trost, hör mein Begier,
Jesus, my comfort, hear my desire,
o mein Heiland, wär ich bei dir.
O my Savior, were I but with you.
