Text for Cantata 66
Erfreut euch, ihr Herzen
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Dialogus

Fear (Alto)
Hope (Tenor)

1. CORO
Erfreut euch, ihr Herzen,
     Rejoice, you hearts,
entweichet, ihr Schmerzen,
     flee, you pains,
the Savior lives and reigns within you.
Ihr könnet verjagen
     You are expelled
das Trauren, das Fürchten, das ängstliche Zagen,
     grief, fear and anxious uncertainty,
der Heiland erquicket sein geistliches Reich.
the Savior restores his divine kingdom.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
The grave is ruptured and with it our agony,
der Mund verkündigt Gottes Taten;
     a voice proclaims this act of God;
der Heiland lebt,
     the Savior lives,
so in agony and death the believer is thoroughly well advised.

3. ARIA BASSO
Laßet dem Höchsten ein Danklied erschallen
Let a song of thanks resound to the Most High
vor sein Erbarmen und ewige Treu.
before his mercy and eternal devotion.
Jesus erscheinet, uns Friede zu geben,
Jesus appears to give us peace,
Jesus berufet uns, mit ihm zu leben,
Jesus beckons us to live with him,
täglich wird seine Barmherzigkeit neu.
     daily is his compassion renewed.

4. RECITATIVO (DIALOGUS) ED ARIOSO DUETTO TENORE ED ALTO
Tenor
Bei Jesu Leben freudig sein
Being joyful to live at Jesus side
ist unsrer Brust ein heller Sonnenschein.
is bright sunshine unto our breast.
Mit Trost erfüllt auf seinen Heiland schauen
With comfort fulfilled, looking unto his Savior,
und in sich selbst ein Himmelreich erbauen,
and building the kingdom of heaven within himself
ist wahrer Christen Eigentum.
is an asset to the true Christian.
Yet since I have here a heavenly refreshment,
thus my spirit seeks here its delight and rest,
mein Heiland ruft mir kräftig zu:
my Savior heartily calls out to me:
Mein Grab und Sterben bringt euch Leben,
My grave and dying bring you life,
mein Auferstehn ist euer Trost.
     my resurrection is your solace.
Mein Mund will zwar ein Opfer geben,
My mouth will indeed impart an offering,
mein Heiland, doch wie klein,
     my Savior, yet how small,
wie wenig, wie so gar geringe
     how tiny,  actually how meager
will it be before you, o great victor,
as I present before you a song of victory and thanks.
Tenor/Alto
Mein/Kein Auge sieht den Heiland auferweckt,
My/No eye sees the Savior raised,
it holds him not/still, this death in its bonds.
Tenor
How can fear still emerge in any breast?
Alto
Läßt wohl das Grab die Toten aus?
Does the grave spare the dead?
Tenor
Wenn Gott in einem Grabe lieget,
When God lies in a grave
so halten Grab und Tod ihn nicht.
still grave and death do not hold him.
Alto
Ach Gott! der du den Tod besieget,
Oh God! you who conquer death,
the grave’s stone yields to you, the seal is broken,
ich glaube, aber hilf mir Schwachen,
I believe, but help my weakness,
du kannst mich stärker machen;
     you can make me stronger;
besiege mich und meinen Zweifelmut,
conquer me and my daring to doubt,
der Gott, der Wunder tut,
     the God who does wonders
hat meinen Geist durch Trostes Kraft gestärket,
has strengthened my spirit by the power of comfort,
daß er den auferstandnen Jesum merket.
for he makes note of the risen Jesus.

5. ARIA DUETTO ALTO E TENORE
Alto/Tenor
Ich furchte zwar/nicht des Grabes Finsternissen
     I fear indeed/not the grave’s darkness
and bemoan/hope that my Savior is now/not wrest away.
Both
Nun ist mein Herze voller Trost,
Now my heart is full of comfort,
und wenn sich auch ein Feind erbost,
and also when an enemy is infuriated,
will ich in Gott zu siegen wissen.
I will know victory in God.

6. CORALE
Alleluja! Alleluja! Alleluja!
     Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Des solln wir alle froh sein,
We shall all be glad at this,
Christus will unser Trost sein.
     Christ will be our consolation.
Kyrie eleis.
     Lord have mercy.
