Text for Cantata 28
Gottlob! nun geht das Jahr zu Ende

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. ARIA SOPRANO
Gottlob! nun geht das Jahr zu Ende,
     Praise God! now the year comes to an end,
das neue rücket schon heran.
     a new one already approaches.
Gedenke, meine Seele, dran,
     Consider this, my soul,
wieviel dir deines Gottes Hände
im alten Jahre Guts getan!
     how much good your God's hands
     did for you this past year!
Stimm ihm ein frohes Danklied an;
     Intone to him a joyful song of thanks;
so wird er ferner dein gedenken
     as he further will think on you
und mehr zum neuen Jahre schenken.
     and bestow you with more this new year.

2. CORO
Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren,
     Now praise, my soul, the Lord,
was in mir ist, den Namen sein!
     that which is within me, praise his name!
Sein Wohltat tut er mehren,
     His benevolence does he increase,
vergiß es nicht, o Herze mein!
     do not forget this, O my heart!
Hat dir dein Sünd vergeben
     [He] has forgiven you your sins
und heilt dein Schwachheit groß,
     and healed your great disability,
errett' dein armes Leben,
     redeemed your poor life,
nimmt dich in seinen Schoß,
     and taken you to his bosom,
mit reichem Trost beschüttet,
     showered with abundant comforts,
verjüngt, dem Adler gleich.
     rejuvenated, like an eagle.
Der Kön'g schafft Recht, behütet,
     The king executes justice, sheltering
die leid'n in seinem Reich.
      those who suffer, within his realm.

3. RECITATIVO (ARIOSO) BASSO
So spricht der Herr:
     Thus says the Lord:
Es soll mir eine Lust sein,
     It shall be for me a pleasure
daß ich ihnen Gutes tun soll,
     that I do good for them,
und ich will sie in diesem Lande pflanzen treulich,
     and I will faithfully plant them upon this land
von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele.
     with complete heart and complete soul.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Gott ist ein Quell, wo lauter Güte fleußt;
     God is a spring, where sheer goodness flows;
Gott ist ein Licht, wo lauter Gnade scheinet;
     God is a light, where sheer mercy shines;
Gott ist ein Schatz, der lauter Segen heißt;
     God is a treasure, known as sheer blessing;
Gott ist ein Herr, der's treu und herzlich meinet.
     God is a Lord, who faithfully and sincerely intends this.
Wer ihn im Glauben liebt,
     Whoever loves him through faith,
in Liebe kindlich ehrt,
     venerates him with love as a child,
sein Wort von Herzen hört
     hears his word at heart,
und sich von bösen Wegen kehrt,
     and turns from evil ways,
dem gibt er sich mit allen Gaben.
     to him he gives himself with all gifts.
Wer Gott hat, der muß alles haben.
     Whoever has God, he has everything.

5. ARIA (DUETTO) ALTO TENORE
Gott hat uns im heurigen Jahre gesegnet,
     God has blessed us this past year,
daß Wohltun und Wohlsein einander begegnet.
     that goodwill and wellbeing attend each other.
Wir loben ihn herzlich und bitten darneben,
     We heartily praise him and additionally request
er woll auch ein glückliches neues Jahr geben.
     he also grant us a happy New Year.
Wir hoffens von seiner beharrlichen Güte
     We hope this from his constant goodness
und preisens ihm voraus mit dankbarm Gemüte.
     and praise him onward, with grateful souls.

6. CORALE
All solch dein Güt wir preisen,
     All such goodness from you we praise,
Vater ins Himmels Thron,
     Father, upon the throne of Heaven,
die du uns tust beweisen
     this you do promise us
durch Christum, deinen Sohn,
     through Christ your son,
und bitten ferner dich:
     and further [we] request of you:
gib uns ein friedsam Jahre,
     grant us a peaceful year,
für allem Leid bewahre
     safeguard from all harm
und nähr uns mildiglich.
     and nourish us generously.
