Text for Cantata 21
Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

ERSTER TEIL  (PART 1)

1. SINFONIA

2. CORO
Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis in meinem Herzen;
     I had great distress in my heart;
aber deine Tröstungen erquicken meine Seele.
but your comforting refreshes my soul.

3. ARIA SOPRANO
Seufzer, Tränen, Kummer, Not,
     Sighs, tears, distress, agony,
ängstlichs Sehnen, Furcht und Tod
     anxious longing, fear and death
nagen mein beklemmtes Herz,
     gnaw at my opressed heart,
Ich empfinde Jammer, Schmerz.
     I undergo misery, pain.

4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Wie hast du dich, mein Gott,
How is it, my God, that you
in meiner Not,
     in my agony,
in meiner Furcht und Zagen
     in my fear and trepidation
denn ganz von mir gewandt?
     have completely turned from me?
Ach! kennst du nicht dein Kind?
Oh! do you not recognize your child?
Ach! hörst du nicht das Klagen
Oh! do you not hear the lamentations
von denen, die dir sind
mit Bund und Treu verwandt?

of those, who are akin to you
     by covenant and loyalty?
Du warest meine Lust
     You were my desire
und bist mir grausam worden;
     but have become cruel to me;
ich suche dich an allen Orten,
I search for you in all places,
ich ruf und schrei dir nach,
I call and cry for you,
allein mein Weh und Ach!
     but my woe and alarm
scheint itzt, als sei es dir ganz unbewusst.
now appear completely unnoticed by you.

5. ARIA TENORE
Bäche von gesalznen Zähren,
     Streams of salty tears
Fluten rauschen stets einher.
     accompanied by floods, rush perpetually.
Sturm und Wellen mich versehren,
     Storm and waves batter me,
und dies trübsalsvolle Meer
     and this tribulation-filled sea
will mir Geist und Leben schwächen,
will weaken me of spirit and life
Mast und Anker wollen brechen,
     mast and anchor will break,
hier versink ich in den Grund,
here I sink to the bottom,
dort seh ins der Hölle Schlund.
there peer into the mouth of Hell.

6. CORO
Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele,
Why are you afflicted, my soul,
und bist so unruhig in mir?
     and so restless within me?
Harre auf Gott;
     Wait upon God;
denn ich werde ihm noch danken,
for I will yet thank him,
daß er meines Angesichtes Hilfe
as he is help before my countenance
und mein Gott ist.
     and is my God.

ZWEITER TEIL  (PART 2)

7. RECITATIVO (DIALOGO) SOPRANO BASSO
Soul (S), Jesus (B)

S:   Ach Jesu, meine Ruh,
         Oh Jesus, my rest,
     mein Licht, wo bleibest du?
my light, where do you remain?
B:   O Seele sieh! Ich bin bei dir.
O Soul, behold! I am beside you.
S:   Bei mir?
         Beside me?
     Hier ist ja lauter Nacht.
But here is indeed only night!
B:   Ich bin dein treuer Freund,
         I am your faithful friend
     der auch im Dunkeln wacht,
who also watches in the dark
     wo lauter Schalken seind.
where many a rogue do dwell.
S:   Brich doch mit deinem Glanz
     und Licht des Trostes ein!
         Break forth with your brilliance
         and light of comfort!
B:   Die Stunde kömmet schon,
         The hour has already arrived
     da deines Kampfes Kron'
in which your crown of combat
dir wird ein süßes Labsal sein.
will become sweet refreshment for you.

8. ARIA (DUETTO) SOPRANO BASSO
Soul (S), Jesus (B)

S:  Komm, mein Jesu, und erquicke,
          Come, my Jesus, and refresh
     und erfreu mit deinem Blicke.
and cheer me by your appearance.
B:  Ja, ich komme und erquicke
          Yes, I come and refresh
     dich mit meinem Gnadenblicker,
          you by my grace appearing,
S:  Diese Seele, die soll sterben,
          This soul, it shall die
     und nicht leben
          and not live
B:  Deine Seele, die soll leben,
          Your soul, it shall live
     und nicht sterben.
          and not die.
S:   und in ihrer Unglückshöhle
     Ganz verderben.
          and completely rot
          in its den of misfortune.
B:  Hier aus dieser wunden Höhle
Here, beyond this den of wounds
     sollst du erben
          you shall inherit
Heil durch diesen Saft der Reben.
          salvation by the vine’s nectar.
S:  Ich muß stets in Kummer schweben,
I must ever drift in distress,
ja, ach ja, ich bin verloren!
yea, oh yea, I am lost!
B:  Nein, ach nein, du bist erkoren!
Nay, oh nay, you have been chosen!
S:  Nein, ach nein, du haßest mich!
Nay, oh nay, you despise me!
B:  Ja, ach ja, ich liebe dich.
Yea, oh yea, I love you.
S:  Ach, Jesu, durchsüße mir Seele und Herze,
Oh, Jesus, sweeten me throughout, heart and soul,
B:  Entweichet, ihr Sorgen, verschwinde, du Schmerze!
Retreat you troubles, vanish you pain!
S:  Komm, mein Jesus, und erquicke
Come, my Jesus, and refresh me
     mit deinem Gnadenblicke!
          by your grace appearing!
B:  Ja, ich komme und erquicke
          Yea, I come and refresh
     dich mit meinem Gnadenblicke.
           you by my grace appearing.

9. CORO E CORALE TENORE E SOPRANO
Sei nun wieder zufrieden, meine Seele,
Now be once more at peace, my soul,
denn der Herr tut dir Guts.
for the Lord does good things for you.

Tenor (Chorale sung above the Choir)
Was helfen uns die schweren Sorgen,
Of what use to us are these heavy sorrows
was hilft uns unser Weh und Ach?
of what use to us our woes and alarm?
Was hilft es, daß wir alle Morgen
beseufzen unser Ungemach?
Of what use is it when we sigh
     every morning over our hardships?
Wir machen unser Kreuz und Leid
We make our cross and suffering
nur größer durch die Traurigkeit.
     only greater with this grief.

Soprano (Chorale sung above the choir)
Denk nicht in deiner Drangsalshitze,
Do not think while in the heat of tribulation
daß du von Gott verlassen seist,
that you are abandoned by God,
und daß Gott der im Schoße sitze,
der sich mit stetem Glücke speist.

and that one who constantly feeds on good fortunes
     is seated at God's side.
Die folgend Zeit verändert viel
The ensuing times will alter much
und setzet jeglichem sein Ziel.
and reveal to every person his purpose.

10. ARIA TENORE
Erfreue dich, Seele, erfreue dich, Herze,
     Rejoice soul, rejoice heart,
entweiche nun, Kummer, verschwinde, du Schmerze!
retreat now distress, vanish you pains!
Verwandle dich, Weinen, in lauteren Wein,
Transform yourself weeping, into wine of plenty,
es wird nun mein Ächzen ein Jauchzen mir sein!
my groaning will now become exultation!
Es brennet und flammet die reineste Kerze
The purest of candles burns and ignites
der Liebe, des Trostes in Seele und Brust,
the love of comfort within the soul and breast,
weil Jesus mich tröstet mit himmlischer Lust.
for Jesus comforts me with heavenly pleasure!

11. CORO
Das Lamm, das erwürget ist,
     The lamb which was slain
ist würdig zu nehmen Kraft und Reichtum
is worthy to assume power and wealth
und Weisheit und Stärke
     and wisdom and strength
und Ehre und Preis und Lob.
and honor and praise and glory.
Lob und Ehre und Preis und Gewalt
Glory and honor and praise and might
sei unserm Gott
     be to our God
von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit. Amen,
     from everlasting to everlasting, Amen,
Alleluja!
      Alleluia!
