1. ARIA BASSO
Selig ist der Mann,
Blessed is the man
der die Anfechtung erduldet;
who endures temptation;
denn, nachdem er bewähret ist,
for once he has passed this test
wird er die Krone des Lebens empfahen.
he will acquire the crown of life.
2. RECITATIVO SOPRANO
Ach! dieser süße Trost
Ah! such sweet comfort
erquickt auch mir mein Herz,
refreshes my heart also,
das sonst in Ach und Schmerz
sein ewige Leiden findet
which otherwise finds its eternal suffering
in alarm and pain
und sich als wie ein Wurm in seinem Blute windet.
and recoils like a worm in its own blood.
Ich muß als wie ein Schaf
bei tausend rauhen Wölfen leben;
I must live like a sheep
among thousands of vicious wolves;
ich bin ein recht verlassnes Lamm,
I am a truly lost lamb,
und muß mich ihrer Wut
und Grausamkeit ergeben.

Was Abeln dort betraf,
What once confronted Abel,

Ich wünschte mir den Tod, den Tod,

wenn du, mein Jesu, mich nicht liebtest.

Ja wenn du mich annoch betrübtest,
Yes, if you saddened me as yet,
so hätt ich mehr als Höllennot.
I would have more than just Hell’s agony.

Ich reiche dir die Hand
I reach out my hand to you
und auch damit das Herze.
and with it too my heart.

Ach! süßes Liebespfand,
Oh! sweet pledge of love,
du kannst die Feinde stürzen
you can topple the foe
und ihren Grimm verkürzen.
and curtail their wrath.

Ja, ja, ich kann die Feinde schlagen,
Yes, yes, I can smite the foe,
die dich nur stets bei mir verklagen,
who constantly tries to indict you in me,
drum fasse dich, bedrängter Geist.
thus compose yourself, hard-pressed spirit.
Bedrängter Geist, hör auf zu weinen,
Hard-pressed spirit, stop your weeping,
die Sonne wird noch helle scheinen,
the sun will yet shine bright,
die dir itzt Kummerwolken weist.

ach striche mir der Wind schon über Gruft und Grab,
ah, that the wind already stroked over my tomb and grave,
so könnt ich alle Not besiegen.

Wohl denen, die im Sarge liegen
Blessed are they, who lie in the casket
und auf den Schall der Engel hofften!
having awaited the peals of angels!
Ach! Jesu, mache mir doch nur,
wie Stephano, den Himmel offen!
Oh! Jesus, indeed just make
open Heaven before me,
like Stephen!
Mein Herz ist schon bereit,

My Savior, I die with utmost desire,
hier hast du die Seele, was schenkest du mir?
here you have my soul, what do you bestow on me?

Align yourself, dearest, to my pleasure, and believe
daß ich dein Seelenfreund immer und ewig verbleibe,
