Wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
1. CORO
Wer sich selbst erhöhet,
Whoever exalts himself,
der soll erniedriget werden,
he shall be humbled,
und wer sich selbst erniedriget,
and whoever humbles himself,
der soll erhöhet werden.
he shall be exalted.
2. ARIA SOPRANO
Wer ein wahrer Christ will heißen,
Whoever will call himself a true Christian
muß der Demut sich befleißen;
must cultivate humility himself.
Demut stammt aus Jesu Reich.
Humility stems from Jesus' kingdom.
Hoffart ist dem Teufel gleich;
Arrogance is aligned with the Devil;
Gott pflegt alle die zu hassen,
God fosters all to detest this
so den Stolz nicht fahrenlassen.
so pride may go no farther.
3. RECITATIVO BASSO
Der Mensch ist Kot, Staub, Asch und Erde;
The human is dung, dust, ash and dirt;
ist's möglich, daß vom Übermut,
als einer Teufelsbrut, er noch bezaubert werde?
is it possible, as brood of the devil,
that he will still be entranced by presumption?
Ach Jesus, Gottes Sohn,
Ah, Jesus, God’s Son,
der Schöpfer aller Dinge,
the creator of all things,
ward unsretwegen niedrig und geringe,
became for our sake, humbled and lowly,
er duldte Schmach und Hohn;
he endured derision and scorn;
und du, du armer Wurm, suchst dich zu brüsten?
and you, you poor worm, pride yourself to boast?
Gehört sich das vor einen Christen?
Does this befit a Christian?
Geh, schäme dich, du stolze Kreatur,
Away, shame on you, you proud creature,
tu Buß und folge Christi Spur;
do penance and follow Christ’s lead;
wirf dich vor Gott im Geiste gläubig nieder!
throw yourself down in faith before God, spiritually!
Zu seiner Zeit erhöht er dich auch wieder.
In his time he will exalt you once more.
4. ARIA BASSO
Jesu, beuge doch mein Herze
Jesus, do bend my heart
unter deine starke Hand,
under your strong hand,
daß ich nicht mein Heil verscherze
that I not forfeit my salvation
wie der erste Höllenbrand.
at the first flames of Hell.
Laß mich deine Demut suchen
Let me seek your humility
und den Hochmut ganz verfluchen;
and completely loath arrogance;
gib mir einen niedern Sinn,
grant me a humbled mind
daß ich dir gefällig bin!
that I might be pleasing to you!

Der zeitlichen Ehr‘n will ich gern entbehr‘n,
I will gladly forgo temporal glories,
du wollst mir nur das Ewge gewährn,
you will simply bestow on me eternity,
das du erworben hast
which you have acquired
durch deinen herben, bittern Tod.
through your cruel, bitter death.
Das bitt ich dich, mein Herr und Gott.
